19th Century Italian Alabaster Carved Head Of A Bishop Saint
Located in Stamford, CT
19th century Italian carved alabaster head of a saint wearing a bishop's mitre in the Gothic style. Though a fragment, the intense gaze of this small carving gives it a lot of presence. Rendered by a master carver, this piece has a lot of personality. Likely an architectural fragment, the weathered surface and distressed condition only add to the appeal of this unique sculpture. Mounted on an ebonized walnut base.

Stunning & Hand Carved Antique Alabaster Sculpture of a Serene Lady by A. Frilli
By Antonio Frilli
Located in Lisse, NL
Top quality carved bust, signed by Antonio Frilli (1830-1902) of Firenze/Florence.
If you are a collector of antique and top-quality works of art then this hand carved and saint-like lady sculpture could be flying your way soon. Over the decades we have owned and sold a number of great sculptures made of all kinds of materials, but this stunning lady could very well be the most beautifully hand carved one of them all. Her hair is perfectly draped in her 'veil' (we don't know the correct word for such a 'hair veil') and the incredibly detailed way in which this was done, reveils the work of the master sculptor that Antonio Frilli was. It is not for no reason that large marble sculptures by this world renowned sculptor realized six figure prices at the most well known auction houses in and outside of Europe. Antonio Frilli clearly was one of the best sculptors of probably the last generation of Italian master sculptors. For anyone to be able to handcarve a perfect 'hair veil' and a serene face like this out of a rock of alabaster, to us, is like the work of a higher power. The manner in which the 'hair veil' is draped over her head and underneith her chin is incredibly realistic. Only a true artisan and master carver is capable of creating such realistic details and it makes this striking lady look even more graceful and serene. Have you also noticed the Gothic rosettes and the Gothic church window-like decorations in the part of the dress that covers her upper body? These details too make us believe that this rare Frilli sculpture depicts a saint or biblical figure. Thanks to its durability this alabaster lady...

Marble Sculpture of the Three Graces Crowning Venus by Antonio Frilli
By Antonio Frilli
Located in London, GB
After a design by Antonio Canova.
The sculpture of white marble, on a revolving serpentine marble base.
Signed: A. FRILLI / FIRENZE.
Sculpture height 173cm, width 116cm, depth 50cm, base height 87.5cm, width 98cm.
This marble replicates the central group from Venus and the Graces Dancing in the Presence of Mars by Antonio Canova. The great neo-classical sculptor produced this composition in tempera on paper and in sculptural relief, long before the idea for his famous sculpture of The Three Graces was presented to him by the Empress Josephine in 1812. Canova conceived the image between 1794 and 1799 and it is not known whether the painting or the relief was the primary version. Both are in the collections at Possagno and depict the same composition, showing the three daughters of Zeus and Euryonome: Euphrosyne, Aglaia and Thalia, dancing with Venus before Mars. Aglaia plays music on her lyre, to which all four women dance on points. Her two sisters delicately balance a crown of flowers above Venus’s head...
