Arnold Genthe was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1869. After graduating from the University of Berlin, Genthe moved to San Francisco in 1895. There, he established himself as a portrait photographer of celebrities. He also did a series of Chinatown genre — which was published as Old Chinatown — and scenes of the destruction caused by the 1906 earthquake. In 1911, Genthe moved to NYC, where he was a pioneer in dance photography, producing Book of the Dance (1916) and Isadora Duncan (1929).
