Unknown Flower (Sketch) (flowers, floral, pink, yellow, abstract, drawing)

Artist Statement
Rachel Burgess makes autobiographical works on paper of landscapes and domestic scenes. Window-like in scale, her pieces combine elements of oil painting, folk art and commercial illustration, exploring our attempts to impose narratives on our lives. Attracted by the accessible, democratic nature of printmaking, she works primarily in monotype, straddling the divide between popular and elite forms of storytelling.
“Deli Flowers My Husband Bought Me” is based on flowers that Burgess’ husband, an NYPD detective, has brought home over the years from their local corner deli. Through iconic renderings of these simple gifts, Burgess pays tribute to the things we take for granted – to the city, to its essential workers...

Old Violinist - Late 19th Century Figurative Lithograph
By John George Brown
Located in Soquel, CA
Finely detailed late 19th century chromo-lithograph portrait of a violinist street musician by John George Brown (British, 1831-1913). Many of Brown’s paintings were reproduced in lithography (Chromo-lithograpy), as is the case with the one offered here. Presented in a rustic antique Oak wood frame with giltwood fillet. Image, 15.63"H x 10.63"W.
John George Brown was a British citizen and an American painter born in Durham, England. His parents apprenticed him to the career of glass worker at the age of fourteen, in an attempt to dissuade him from pursuing painting. He studied nights at the School of Design in Newcastle-on-Tyne while working as a glass cutter there between 1849 and 1852, and evenings at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh while working at the Holyrood Glass Works between 1852 ad 1853. After moving to New York City in 1853, he studied with Thomas Seir Cummings at the National Academy of Design where he was elected a National Academician in 1861. Brown was the Academy’s vice-president from 1899 to 1904.
Around 1855, he worked for the owner of the Brooklyn Glass Company, and later he married the daughter of his employer. His father-in-law encouraged his artistic abilities, supporting him financially, letting Brown pursue painting full-time. In 1866, he became one of the charter members of the Water-Color Society, of which he was president from 1887 to 1904. Brown became famous for his depictions of street urchins found of the streets of New York (bootblacks, street musicians, posy sellers, newsboys, etc.).
Brown’s art is best characterized as British genre painting...

About the Artist:
Born in Boise, Idaho, 1926, Beth Van Hoesen was educated at Stanford University, Stanford, CA; B.A. in 1948. She studied at Escuela Esmaralda, Mexico; Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, France; San Francisco Art Institute; San Francisco State College; Ecole des Beaux Arts de Fontainbleau, France, 1948; Academie Julian, Paris, France, 1948-50; St. Cere/Aubusson, France, 1955.
Exhibitions included Library of Congress, Washington D.C.; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia.
Her work is included in the following collections: Brooklyn Museum; Chicago Art Institute; Museum of Modern Art; New York; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Van Hoesen worked in printmaking exclusively since 1956. She studied with Daniel Mendelowitz at Stanford and Clyfford Still at San Francisco Art Institute. Clyfford Still introduced her to his ideas of space relationship. "Her most influential teacher was David Park at San Francisco Art Institute. His stubborn determination to work from the figure in an era of increasing and fashionable abstraction was an inspiration to her." (Robert Flynn Johnson, exhibition brochure, de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara).
The nude and portraits were of special interest to her in her early work. Her later work centers around the still life and depiction of animals. Regarding her technique, it was written: "Her craftsmanship was impressive. Combining engraving, drypoint and sugarlift aquatint, sometimes using fingers in place of the traditional cotton swab, Van Hoesen wipes her plates with gradations of soft-edged color. " (Review by Andrew DeShong...
