A scarcely seen matte green handled form from the Bybee Pottery in Lexington, KY between 1922-1929. This example is from the "Genuine Bybee" (tm) line. The partial paper label is a rare survivor. The matte glaze has a depth of surface and charcoaled appearance that results from a most successful microcrystalline glaze treatment. Most often... they simply don't look this good. Although scholars argue precise dates regarding the beginning and ending of the Arts and Crafts Movement, particular when the American South is concerned, there is a long tradition of incorporating matte glazed (especially green) Bybee in both Arts and Crafts and in Southern Folk Art...
