Sebastiani Gubbio 'Bucchero' Ceramic Pitcher with Gold Decoration, Italy, 1960s
Located in Meer, VAN
Sebastiani Gubbio 'Bucchero' Ceramic Pitcher with Gold Decoration, Italy, 1960s.
Beautiful sleek and slender matte black mid century ceramic pitcher with hand painted golden decoration. Distinct 'Bucchero' ceramic with a very deep and beautiful black color - famously made in the village of Gubbio in Italy. This pitcher is made by one of the 'Bucchero' makers in the village, named Sebastiani.
It features a wonderful hand painted golden decoration showing two ladies interacting. The ceramic gets its characteristic black color through a special process in which the oxygen is removed from the red clay. So no paint or varnish is used. This is a technique that dates back to the Etruscans. Famous makers are Carlo Alberto Rossi - who worked with Gio Ponti - and Elio Cerbella...

Gubbio Pair of Renaissance Ceramic Jars, Italy
By C.A.M. Gubbio
Located in Sofia, BG
Gubbio is a beautiful town of ancient origins. Its strategic position and the dominance of wealthy and politically important families during the Renaissance greatly contributed to the development of Arts & Crafts.
The three brothers settled in Gubbio in 1498. In their Bottega they elaborated a special lustre technique which allowed them to obtain an exquisite golden and red iridescent effect on polychrome figurative Majolica. The success was huge and, despite the high prices and the limited production, noblemen and wealthy merchants lined up to own one of Mastro Giorgio masterpieces.
At the beginning of the 20th century important studies on the Etruscan techniques allowed the production of an old ceramic artwork called “bucchero”. Beautiful, classically shaped pots and urns...
