Enzo Mari for Danese "Quattro Spirali" Sculpture, 1958-1968
By Danese Milano, Enzo Mari
Located in Amsterdam, NL
An extremely rare metal sculpture designed by Enzo Mari, manufactured by Danese in Italy between 1958 and 1968.
Only 50 of these pieces have been produced, this is number 10, labeled and numbered in the back.
It is made of high quality grey and black aluminium and is designed to create a unique optical effect. From the front, it has a square shape with four openings. Each opening reveals a hand sawn spiral shape, each spiral has a different angle. The piece is divided in two rectangular departments, each department holds two spirals and the backs are both bent in different positions. This creates a unique perception of depth from every viewing angle.
This rare find is a true tribute to the creativity of Enzo Mari. It remains in good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina.
Enzo Mari (born 1932) is a noted Italian modernist artist and furniture designer. He draws inspiration from the idealism of the arts and crafts movement, and his political views as a communist.
Mari was born in Novara, Italy and he studied at the Brera Academy in Milan, Italy from 1952-1956. In the 1960s, published a series of books, including "The Apple and the Butterfly," a wordless book of paintings depicting the story of a caterpillar and an apple.
In the 1970s, he founded the Nuova Tendenza art movement as a professor at Societa` Umanitaria, also in Milan. Also in that decade, he designed the Sof Sof...
