Daniel Ridgway Knight was an American artist born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Knight was a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Gleyre and later worked in the private studio of Meissonier. After 1872, he lived in France, having a house and studio at Poissy on the Seine.

American artist Daniel Ridgway Knight was born in Pennsylvania and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1872 he lived and worked at Poissy on the River Seine, just to the west of Paris.
Best known for his landscapes and depictions of peasant women in the fields, Knight earned distinction at the Paris Salon of 1882. He went to be was awarded the Silver Medal and Cross of the Legion d’Honneur at the Exposition Universelle in 1889, the Gold Medal of Honour from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1893 and in that same year was created a Knight of the Royal Order...

The young woman is a known model for Knight. She is depicted in numerous paintings. The striped skirt and wooden shoes she wears also is repeated in Knight's oeuvre.
"Daniel Ridgway Knight was born in Philadelphia to a Quaker family and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1858 to 1861, the year he became a founding member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He went to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1861 to 1863 with Charles Gleyre (1808-1874) and Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), and attended the Accademia di San Lucca, then in Venice, in 1863. Knight returned to Philadelphia that year, married, and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He went back to France in 1871 and lived there for the remainder of his long and successful career. He settled in Seine-et-Oise near Poissy to study with the noted academic painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) in 1873, and the two artists became close friends. Johann Berthelsen was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven children, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. His parents were involved in artistic and professional circles. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually move to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And he always loved to draw and paint, and while he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork, and never went beyond the 5th grade.
