David Adickes Figurative Sculptures

American, b. 1927

David Adickes was born in Huntsville, Texas in 1927 and graduated from Huntsville High School in 1943. Nearing the end of World War II, at age 17, he joined the U.S. Air Force and regularly traveled to France. “I always liked art and was always drawing in the margins of my book,” Adickes said. “But being in Paris where there are galleries and museums on every corner — as just a small town kid from Huntsville, Texas — that was my turning point.” After completing his service, Adickes returned to Huntsville and earned his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University. He then studied art with artist Fernand Leger in France for two years before moving to Houston to open his own art school.

Sculptor David Adickes is known for a major project titled Presidents Park in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he created 42 portraits bust of American presidents. Each sculpture is twenty feet tall, and their size was the subject of much protest and controversy. However, a court ruling allowed them to stay. "Don't Cry Long" Abstracted and Distorted Self-Portrait, One Crying Eye
Located in Detroit, MI
"Don't Cry Long" is a self-portrait of the artist and an unusual one at that in which the artist portrays herself shedding tears. Perhaps it is an expression of some grief experienced by Ms. Woodlock, but it also admonishes her to not "Cry Long" while at the same time poking fun because of her elongated face and the one lone "long" tear tracing a pattern down her face. In addition to self-portraits, Ethelyn painted commissioned portraits. In this painting her head is cocked and her famous bangs hang down her forehead. Compare two self-portraits, “Up From Under”, and “M’Eyes" to "Don't Cry Long." The major differences are the close facial view and the brilliant blood red paint that fills the entire canvas. This painting is included in the book, "Dreams Have Wings: An Artist's Journey into Magic and Mystery" printed in the United States, 1985. She describes "Don't Cry Long" as showing how funny looking we are, if we cry too long. Ethelyn Woodlock...

Flowing Scarf - Bronze Sculpture
Located in Houston, TX
Bronze sculpture by renowned artist David Adickes. Circa 1969. Published in Southwest Art, July 1980 issue. David Adickes is known for the large statues he sculpts. He sculpted a 67-foot replica of Sam Houston for the city of Huntsville, Texas. In Lead, South Dakota, Adickes created 43 enormousness busts of each American president for display at an educational museum. His workshop in Houston is open to the public and features many of his most outstanding works. Not intended to be a destination, the workshop/gallery has turned into a destination, an often surprising site where one can see something out of the ordinary in the middle of an industrial part of Houston, Texas. Giant heads will occasionally sit in the parking lot and huge sculptures of the Beatles and former President Bush...
