David L. Ghilchik Figurative Paintings
David Louis Ghilchik was a painter, and cartoonist for Punch magazine and the Daily Sketch. He was the son of Abraham Josef Ghilchik and his wife Sali. Abraham traded in lace and linen. David’s family settled in Salford in 1920, where he had enrolled at the Manchester School of Art and studied under Adolphe Valette from 1907–15. At the school, he met fellow student Josephine Matley Duddle, marrying her in Chelsea in the last quarter of 1915. David continued his studies at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Tonks and Ambrose McEvoy. During World War I, he served as a truck driver on the Italian front. Later, he took part in the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics, representing Great Britain in the mixed painting, drawing and watercolor categories. He also exhibited his oil paintings widely, most notably at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. His style is thought to have been influenced by Christopher Wood.
