Donald Keefe was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1984, grew up in Southern California, and has lived and worked all around the United States from rural
Appalachia to New York City and Miami, Florida.
He received a BFA from the University of Kentucky in 2009, and an MFA from the University of Florida in 2013.
Donald’s artwork has been exhibited nationally, included in a variety of publications, and won awards. He has also completed private commissions and
was the recipient of a federal grant for a public arts project.
He currently lives just outside of Chattanooga with his wife and two sons, where he serves as Associate Professor of Art at Southern Adventist University.to

UNTITLED CONSTRUCT 4 - Framed Red, Yellow, & Teal Abstract Oil Painting

"I don’t do enough red paintings. I like red, but somehow it doesn’t end up in my work all that often, or it ends up pretty muted and earthy by the end. When I was lighting the sculpture upon which this painting is based, I knew I wanted to do something with the red lights I had.
As with previous work, this painting explores entanglement as both a compositional structure and as an artistic idea. The representational part of the painting is pushed as close to a photographic rendering as I could at the time. Meanwhile, I’ve contrasted that with flat graphic elements. I also wanted to do something interesting with the cast shadow of the form: whereas in some previous works in the series the main form either had a traditional cast shadow grounding the it to the illusion of a ground plane, or no cast shadow which left it floating within the shallow depth of the image, in Untitled Construct 5 I wanted to do something more specific with the cast shadow. The idea came to me to invert it to be pure white. Technically this was a bit of a challenge because the whitest oil paints take months to dry – so this work had quite a bit of ‘sit and wait time’ between layers.
Personally, I enjoy the composition of this painting because the red attracts the eye towards the bottom left of the painting, but the contrasting movements in black, gray and white pull the eye up and over...

As a teenager he started to experiment with oils, acrylics and took his passion for art to the canvas. Even after painting for over 20 years, he still pushes the boundaries while experimenting with mixed medias, including oil, acrylic, gouache, and spray paint.
Alfonso attended art school in Tampa, Florida and travelled Europe for several years in search of inspiration and his own unique voice in art. Alfonso used his in depth studies of European Masters and was inspired by Picasso, Braque, Klee, Dali, Basquiat, De Kooning and Matisse. The joyful expressions of his artworks resonate with positive light and inspire creative thinking and innovation. His works have been represented by the seller, Los Angeles and exhibited in Florida and California. They have been collected throughout the US.
