Dorothy Krakovsky Art
Dorothy Krakovsky (1924–2015) was a contemporary abstract painter whose most significant body of work emerged in the final years of her life. Though she earned her M.A. in painting from the University of Iowa in 1971, financial hardship and health struggles largely stifled her artistic output for decades. It was not until her 80s, after moving to New York City and receiving financial patronage from a relative in 2011, that she experienced an explosive surge of creativity. Working from her apartment studio, she produced over 60 monumental canvases in just four years. Her intuitive "action painting" style—praised by colorist Robert Swain as akin to "free form jazz"—ranges from vibrant, chaotic compositions to somber, airy works. Krakovsky held her first and only solo exhibition at the age of 90.
