Emile Bressler Art

Swiss, 1886-1966
Among the many Geneva painters of the first half of the century, Emile Bressler is immediately noticed by the originality of his talent. His intrusion into Fauvism, at the end of the 1910s, beginning of the 1920s, should even have made him one of the retrospective masters of this school. But his artistic evolution, even his detachment, and especially the war, decided otherwise. Returning to his homes, the painter pruned. Loaded with the dust of time, his painting has gradually been refined. From the landscape that had long been vibrant with matter, Bressler only sought to render the essential, to the point of completing his journey in serenity, out of fashion which, in any case, could no longer reach him. Perhaps Emile Bressler came from too far away, not so much in time or space, but in the soul. Orphaned at the age of 14, his only goal was painting. Without the insistence of the singer Clotilde Bressler-Gianoli, he would probably not have succeeded. But his sister-in-law insisted that the young man follow the School of Fine Arts, where his undeniable talent could flourish. Henceforth, painting accompanied him throughout his life. After discovering oil in 1910, the young painter struck a blow by winning the highly sought-after first prize from the Diday Foundation. The most important critic of the time, Mrs. L.Florentin, said of him: "Here he imposes himself, with his vision, with his technique and that we can no longer forget him". This was the real starting point for Bressler. Before the 14-18 war, with his wife, he went first to Cassis, then to Paris where he fears any contemporary influence, so attached is he to work in the field, in the landscape. Without knowing that he would never exhibit in Paris, he left for Brittany where, after a few months, he had painted about twenty canvases allowing him, by adding his canvases of Paris, to consider a first personal exhibition. Returning to Geneva he was a great success, and in 1920, found in Vernaz new landscapes dictating many paintings to him. After years of travels and the birth of his daughter Madeleine, Bressler experienced World War II in France, and so at that time his painting expressed his horror of what was happening. In 1949, with the death of his wife Blanche Sarzeau, solitude won over him and he left his home in Thônex for Spain, from where he brought back sumptuous landscapes, then for a final pilgrimage to the shores of the Mediterranean. He died in 1966 following a broken femur, but we will remember an artist out of time, forever. Text by Alain Penel, taken from the preface of the book: Emile Bressler

Las Ramblas Barcelona Flower Market Street Scene Painting Urban Impressionist

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Scenes of Las Ramblas in Barcelona remain among the most recognizable urban subjects in European painting and are highly sought after by collectors and interior designers worldwide. Artist Jordi Junyent Title Rambla de las Flores, Barcelona Date 1988 Medium Oil on canvas Dimensions 50 × 61 cm 19.7 × 24 in Signature Signed “Junyent” lower left and dated 1988. Frame Unframed Condition Very good condition. Canvas firm and well stretched. Stable paint layer with bright colors. No visible restorations. Atmospheric urban painting depicting Las Ramblas flower market in Barcelona, one of the most recognizable and vibrant locations in the city. The composition captures the scene after rainfall, with reflective pavement, flower stalls and strolling figures creating depth and movement. The wet street surface reflects light and silhouettes, enhancing the lively Mediterranean atmosphere. Executed with a confident and expressive brushstroke, the artist uses a palette dominated by cool greys, greens and blues contrasted with vivid reds from the flower displays. The simplified figures and loose handling of paint emphasize the mood of the place rather than strict detail, a characteristic approach of post-impressionist urban painting. Scenes of Barcelona’s Las Ramblas are particularly sought after in the international decorative art market due to their strong visual identity and association with one of Europe’s most iconic boulevards. An attractive and highly decorative cityscape, ideal for collectors of European urban painting or for interior design settings seeking a vibrant Mediterranean atmosphere. Jordi Junyent was a Spanish painter active in the late twentieth century whose work focused primarily on urban scenes and Mediterranean city views. His paintings often depict recognizable locations such as the streets of Barcelona, rendered with a loose brushstroke and an emphasis on atmosphere, light and color. Working within a post-impressionist tradition, Junyent developed compositions that balance figurative clarity with painterly spontaneity, making his works appealing within the European decorative art market. Title: Paris Café Terrace Scene Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 38 × 46 cm (14.96 × 18.11 in) Framing: Unframed Signature: Hand-signed lower right Period: Second half of the 20th century Condition: Very good. Firm canvas, stable paint layer, visible impasto, no apparent restorations. Origin: Spain Original oil painting depicting a lively Parisian café terrace scene, rendered with a luminous and expressive brushstroke. The composition captures a moment of everyday urban life: seated figures, soft conversation, café signage and filtered daylight dissolving into architectural shadows. The artist prioritizes atmosphere over strict detail, allowing the scene to breathe through fluid impasto and subtle tonal transitions. The chromatic palette balances cool bluish greys and whites with warmer accents, creating depth and visual rhythm. The treatment of figures and light evokes European post-impressionist tradition, combining figurative clarity with painterly spontaneity. A refined decorative piece with strong interior presence, ideal for collectors of European figurative art, lovers of Parisian imagery, or elegant contemporary interiors seeking warmth and narrative. Àngel Badia i Camps (Puig-reig, Barcelona, 1929 – Barcelona, 2019) was a Catalan painter, illustrator and comic artist trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts. During the 1950s and 1960s he worked extensively as an illustrator for European and British publishers, developing a strong command of the human figure and narrative composition. From the 1970s onward he focused primarily on fine art painting, producing figurative works centered on urban scenes, landscapes and everyday life. His work was exhibited in Spanish and international galleries, consolidating his position within the Catalan figurative tradition of the second half of the 20th century. Paris café painting...
