Sheraton gave his name to a style of furniture characterised by a feminine refinement of late Georgian styles and became the most powerful source of inspiration behind the furniture of the late 18th century. His four-part Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterers’ Drawing Book greatly influenced English and American design. Sheraton was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker, but he became better known as an inventor, artist, mystic, and religious controversialist. Initially he wrote on theological subjects, describing himself as a “mechanic, one who never had the advantage of collegiate or academical education.” He settled in London c. 1790, and his trade card gave his address as Wardour Street, Soho. Supporting himself mainly as an author, Sheraton wrote Drawing Book (1791), the first part of which is devoted to somewhat naive, verbose dissertations on perspective, architecture, and geometry and the second part, on which his reputation is certainly based, is filled with plates that are admirable in draftsmanship, form, and proportion. In 1803 Sheraton, who had been ordained a Baptist minister in 1800, published his Cabinet Dictionary (with plates), containing An Explanation of All Terms Used in the Cabinet, Chair and Upholstery Branches with Dictionary for Varnishing, Polishing and Gilding. Some of the designs in this work, venturing well into the Regency style, are markedly unconventional. That he was a fashionable cabinetmaker is remarkable, for he was poor, his home of necessity half shop. It cannot be presumed that he was the maker of those examples even closely resembling his plates. Although Sheraton undoubtedly borrowed from other cabinetmakers, most of the plates in his early publications are supposedly his own designs. The term Sheraton has been recklessly bestowed upon vast quantities of late 18th-century painted and inlaid satinwood furniture...

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2024
To identify your Ercol chair, look for its stamp, which is usually located under the seat. Most pieces display both a style number and the year of production. You can cross-reference this information with data available in trusted online resources to learn the name of your chair and other information about it. Alternatively, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable dealer can assist you with identification. On 1stDibs, shop a range of Ercol chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 27, 2024
To tell if furniture is Ercol, search for maker's markings, usually found on the undersides or backs of pieces. Ercol furniture typically displays the British maker's logo along with the date of production and the model number. If you have difficulty locating the mark, an expert appraiser or antiques dealer can assist you with the identification process. Find a variety of Ercol furniture on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
To know if a chair is Ercol, locate the maker's mark. You'll normally find it on the bottom of the seat or on the back of the chair. Most pieces will display a stamp with the brand name, the chair's model number and the year of production. Should you have difficulty locating the mark, a certified appraiser or expert dealer can help you determine whether your piece is an Ercol. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Ercol chairs.

To tell if your Ercol is real, look for the maker's markings. Authentic pieces will typically show the maker's logo, the date of production and the model number in an inconspicuous area. Because many convincing replicas do exist, you may wish to have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable dealer authenticate your piece for you. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Ercol furniture.

  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 29, 2024
To tell how old an Ercol chair is, examine its label, usually under the seat. Some chairs will have the date of manufacture printed right on them, immediately allowing you to date them. Others may display a style number you can look up online to date your chair. When these methods don't work, the label itself can provide clues. The British furniture maker has identified its pieces with different styles of labels over the years, so by comparing what's present on your piece to reference images published on trusted online resources, you can often estimate its age. If you have difficulty dating your chair, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can assist you. On 1stDibs, explore an assortment of Ercol chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 8, 2024

The age, type, style and condition all play a role in determining the value. To find out how much a particular piece is worth, enlist the help of a certified appraiser or experienced antiques dealer. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of Ercol chairs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
