Florence Putterman Art

American, b. 1927

Florence Putterman studied at New York University, Bucknell University and — intent on advancing her education — she enrolled in Penn State's Master of Fine Arts program. Although feeling out of time and place alongside classmates not long out of high school, she stayed on to get her master of fine arts degree. “I felt old and straight,” she says. With the degree in hand, her children married, and her husband as busy as ever, Florence settled in at home, bought an etching and lithography press and wondered, “What now?” Then serendipity took a hand.

One day, “while fooling around with my etchings,” Putterman began experimenting with monotypes, the medium upon which she would center her reputation as an artist for many years. A relatively minor art form in the United States when Putterman began producing them in the early 1970s, the unreproducible monotype has since become increasingly popular. Putterman, who was awarded a National Endowment Grant in 1979, has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Europe. Florence’s works have received numerous awards and accolades including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Pennsylvania State University. Her painting and prints can be seen in many museums and corporate collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum, New York; Chicago Art Institute, Chicago; and Jacksonville Museum, Polk Museum and Gulf Coast Museum in Florida. Putterman is listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in American Women, and Who's Who in America.
