Austrian, 1838-1894
There were many bronze foundries operating in Vienna in this period, but it was Bergman’s which became the most celebrated, working with a number of celebrated Viennese sculptors at the turn of the 20th Century, such as Bruno Zach, to produce designs for his famous bronze figures.
Bergman bronzes are especially famous for having utilised a technique for decorating the bronzes called cold painting. Cold painting as a technique developed in Vienna in the late 19th Century, and involved the application of several layers of paint added to the bronze after firing. It was used to make fashionable collectors’ items.
Bergman figures came in three main forms: animal figures, Orientalist sculptures, and erotic figures in the Art Nouveau style. His animal figures were often whimsical and humorous, and often satirical. They have become highly sought-after collectors’ items today.
Bergman’s Orientalist sculptures are equally highly sought-after. He was producing these figures at a time when interest in the exotic lands of the Middle East and North Africa was at its peak among Europe’s artists and buyers.to

The lamp is superbly made by Franz Xaver Bergman (1961-1936), a renowned Austrian artist known for his Orientalist cold-painted bronze sculptures.
Two male figures are depicted in an outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is made from brick walls, bamboo stick construction and various textiles acting as the roof. The brick walls are adorned with hooks on which mugs and jugs hang as well as a wooden shelf with plates. Both figures are dressed in typical Orientalist garments and head coverings. One is seen holding a bucket during the task of extracting water from a well while the second is sitting and eating near a centrally positioned fireplace. Near the walls of the well sits a charming cat licking his paw.

This fine Viennese cold painted bronze lamp was made by the foundry of Franz Xavier Bergman (1861-1936). After inheriting his father's bronze factory, Bergman opened his own foundry in Vienna in 1900. An eminently talented artist, Bergman went on to design a variety of cold painted bronze figural pieces and lamps, many of which had an orientalist or erotic theme.
Cold painted bronze pieces made by Bergman's foundry are known for their intricate detail. Larger figures and lamps often had hidden components which were not immediately apparent upon initial inspection, adding a playful design element. Bergman's polychrome paint decoration is also worthy of note. Rather than firing pieces to affix paint to bronze, Bergman's decorators engaged in a meticulous process of hand painting pieces which involved applying one layer of polychrome paint at a time, each of which was allowed to dry before application of the next layer.
This charming table lamp is an excellent example of Bergman's craftsmanship and has been modeled as a medieval cobbler's house/workshop. The two-story house has been equipped with blue, yellow and red stained glass windows...
