Frederick Milton Grant Art

American, 1886-1959

Frederick Milton Grant was born in Sibley, Iowa, on October 6, 1886. After studying at the AIC, Grant traveled to Venice, Italy, in 1907 to enroll in one of William M. Chase's summer classes. While there, Chase awarded Grant the annual prize for the best summer student. On that trip, he also studied in Paris and became more familiar with the work of Monet and Cézanne. Returning to Chicago, he became a popular and respected member of the local art community. In 1914, he traveled to California to again participate in Chase's summer class in Carmel. A brilliant colorist, Chase's influence is seen in his work. In 1947, Grant moved to Oakland, California, where he remained until his demise on February 4, 1959.
