Tonalist Sunset

By George Henry Bogert

Located in Buffalo, NY

An original oil on canvas painting by well listed American artist George Henry Bogert (1864-1944). This stunning painting comes in its original period frame. The canvas size of the work is 20" (h) x 30" (w) and the framed size is 32" (h) x 42" (w). Born in New York City, George Henry Bogert became known for landscapes, seascapes of Venice and urban subjects and is especially aligned with the style of Tonalism* and the Barbizon School* of painting. In his signature work, he used "cool blue tones to achieve blurred form and soft half-light effects, further accentuated by the application of dense impasto." (Zellman 385). Much of this work seemed related to the popular turn-of-the-century soft focus photography. In the early 1880s, he studied at the National Academy of Design* and then went to Paris where his teachers were Puvis de Chavannes, Raphael Collin and Aime Morot...
