Georges Dayez Paintings

French, 1907-1991

Georges Dayez was a well-known and prolific, mid-century French painter, who produced figurative and abstract compositions executed in his own unique modernist, Cubist-inspired style. Dayez was born in Paris in 1907 to a commercial printer, who moved the family to Vaires-sur-Marne in 1909. He received a traditional French education through which he was introduced to drawing, painting and fine art. Dayez worked with his father in a print shop and took evening drawing classes taught by the sculptor Henry Arnold (the future artists Yves Brayer, Robert Humblot, Raymond Corbin and Raymond Martin were his fellow students). Unable to afford the tuition of the academies of Montparnasse, the popular painter Lucien Smith permitted Dayez to audit his atelier in 1926. While in Paris, Dayez attended the prestigious yet free École des Beaux-arts. The artist debuted at the Salon d’Automne, the first independent and progressive exhibition venue in Paris in 1928, and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon de Mai throughout his long and prolific career. Dayez also used his artistic proficiency in painting and drawing to design tapestries for the Mobilier National, which governs the Gobelins and Beauvais manufactories, and a vast mosaic for the Lycée Français in Lisbon.

Spirit
By William Y. Cooper
Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper. William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher. Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969. His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.” Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree. Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...

"Paysage de la Côte d'Azur" by G. Mathias – Cubist Oil and Acrylic Painting
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Paysage de la Cote d'Azur 65 x 54 cm Oil and Acrylic on Canvas Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is a vibrant tribute to the sunny allure of the French Riviera, interpreted through Diachronic Cubism. This piece captures the energy of the Côte d'Azur with its fragmented yet harmonious composition. Rich yellows, deep blues, and bright reds evoke the Mediterranean sun, sea, and architecture, while angular shapes and layered perspectives bring movement and depth. A small figure and sailboats add a narrative touch, inviting the viewer to explore the scene from multiple viewpoints. Mathias masterfully merges cubist abstraction with a lively depiction of this iconic region. Perfect For: Collectors of Mediterranean landscapes, amateurs of cubist art, and those drawn to the vibrant charm of the Côte d'Azur. Paysage de la Côte d'Azur is an exquisite addition to any collection, infusing any space with color and modernity. Keywords: Diachronic Cubism, Greg Mathias, Côte d'Azur landscape painting, cubist oil and acrylic art, French Riviera art...

Located in New Orleans, LA
You don't have to be a Catholic, or a medievalist, or a Catholic medievalist (Tolkien?) to appreciate this striking image of St. George taking on the dragon.
