Georgia Griffin Paintings

b. 1961

Georgia Griffin is a self-taught artist working primarily in acrylic and oil. She also enjoys exploring clay, resin and assemblage works, writing and photography. A long-time resident of South Texas, Griffin spent several years writing for the former monthly CC Magazine. She resigned from the magazine in 2014 to focus on Memory Shrouds, a posthumous collaboration with her late father. In 2016, Griffin relocated with her family to New England and took a year off.

Artist Comments
The bison and the beetle have a prehistoric elegance about them that I thought would compliment each other perfectly. Symbolically, both represent life and mortality, which has been on my mind lately. To Native Americans, bison are symbolic of sacred life and abundance. And in ancient greek mythology the beetle became revered as a symbol of rebirth and immortality -- its daily journey across the sky became an allegory of human life. The Wallpaper collection is a juxtaposition of masculine meets feminine. I wanted to create a unique series that stands apart from traditional nature paintings, where the wild and somewhat prehistoric aspects of my animals featured contrast against their delicate backdrops. In addition to this, many of my paintings are created with a little bit of underlying symbolism usually sparked from a world event or life moment that I am experiencing. I concentrate on this theme as a therapeutic mantra throughout the creation of the painting. For each painting, different techniques and layers of design are implemented when creating the wall paper effect. To keep the patterns consistent I create a stencil to outline the shapes of my hummingbirds, bugs and fish, and then I hand paint each shape individually. In the areas where I wanted a little more chaos, I would forgo the stencil and eyeball each design. My animals are always painted first, and then I layout the design around them.

Surrealist Large Painting Royal College of Art LGBTQ+ Female Blue Green Water

By Isabel Rock

Located in Norfolk, GB

Isabel Rock is a creator of contemporary fairy tales. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, her work is an explosion of strange occurrences while a surreal narrative takes the audience on a journey into the imagination. In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024. Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you, that that you decide to follow. Artwork Details: Water, 122 x 152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic inks on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Water; Once upon a time there was water. It fell from the sky in clear blue droplets. It made pools and puddles on the ground. The water tasted sweet and pure, it was good to drink, to make soup, to swim in or to wash in. It made the plants and trees grow big and luscious, it was the lifeblood of everything.. Everybody loved water and no one ever questioned where it came from or that one day the rain might stop and there would be no water.  The water women went about their usual business, they made soup, they grew cabbages, they argued and laughed together. The well was always full, there was food aplenty, life thrived. It is sometimes said that ignorance is bliss, and the women did live in bliss although they did not know it. They did not know that one day the rain would stop. It was only when the rain stopped that they knew they had lived in bliss. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Whilst the work is on heavy duty art paper and mixed media, the artist is happy that the painting will be fine rolled in a tube. This is a more cost effective and environmentally sound method of shipping. Shipping via this method is free. About Isabel Rock and her work: Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations. Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel...

Sunfish King Louis the Fishteenth Comes framed The Sunfish King, Louis the Fishteenth, is naturally modeled on King Louis the XIV, the "Sun King." Draped in the Coronation mantle in French blue velvet embroidered with fleur-de-lis and lined with ermine, the Sunfish King emulates his noble counterpart's jaunty posture. He holds the scepter upside down, leaning on it as if a dandy with a cane. Louis the Fishteenth wears a whimsical version of the necklace of the Order of the Holy Spirit. Our Sunfish King loves reigning in the deep blue sea. Thus the original necklace's dove in pavé diamonds has been replaced by the huge blue diamond...

Surrealist Whimsical Sea Horse About Close attention to detail. Surreal Dark Humor Whimsical Surrealism COMES ON STRETCHED CANVAS, FRAMED. About the Series: “Sovereigns of the Sea.” The series grew out of an amusing little sketch she did of a fish in a gown. Very soon she was researching official portraits of Queen Elizabeth I, studying the gowns and crown jewels of her era. Reimagining her royal visage through a chimerical lens, Queen Elizafish was born. Gradually that lens showed Georgia an array of colorful characters in a world where semi-anthropomorphic sea creatures are the sovereigns of days gone by. Her subjects are rendered in what Georgia calls whimsical surrealism, aquatic nobles surveying their dominions on dry land but never far from their seas. She researches royals’ portraits and histories, and renders their alter egos seriously, while sharing a wink with the viewer. King Henry VIII Crabbe soon followed the Queen, and then came King Richard Eel, Georgia's portrait of Richard III. Remarkable for his sharply curving back and sad expression, Richard Eel’s crown rests on a cushion at his side. After a hiatus for cross-country relocation, she produced the brilliantly colored Emperor JeLee Kangxi, a jellyfish interpretation of the 4th Emperor of the Qing dynasty upon his carved throne. That brings us to Dom João Hipocampo I, Johnny Rei to his friends. Fresh off Georgia's easel, this portrait shows Dom João I as a vibrant golden seahorse cloaked in a cape the rich blue of Portugal's famous azulejos (tiles). The 10th and longest reigning King of Portugal (1385-1433), Dom João I established the Aviz dynasty and vanquished Castile, thus guaranteeing Portugal's continued independence. Her subjects are rendered in what Georgia calls whimsical surrealism, aquatic nobles surveying their dominions on dry land but never far from their seas. She researches royals’ portraits and histories, and renders their alter egos seriously, while sharing a wink with the viewer. Coming across the famous copies of Hans Holbein the Younger’s lost portrait of Henry VIII, Georgia knew at once her next subject; surely King Henry VIII Crabbe was crying out to be painted! From there the wan figure of the oft misunderstood King Richard III caught her eye. Richard, with his back fiercely curved by scoliosis, who lost his crown when ignominiously buried during battle only to be rediscovered centuries later under a car park in Leicester, became King Richard Eel. Remarkable for his sharply curving back and sad expression, Richard Eel’s crown rests on a cushion at his side. About the Artist: Georgia Griffin...
