A hollow brushed steel cube with sides cut out following a design of organic rectangular shapes. Set akimbo on a steel stand, the cube reflects the light and casts complex shadows. The theme of optical geometry links this new work with this established sculptor's early commissioned work for the Canadian Government Pavilion at Expo '67.
Gord Smith studied Architecture and Engineering at Sir George Williams University, and went on to work with the architectural firm of Lawson Betts and Cash in Montreal. In 1967, he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Arts of the University of Victoria from 1972 to 1975 and Visiting Professor in the Dept. of Art and History, McMaster University, Hamilton in the 1990s.
