Gord Smith Abstract Sculptures
Canadian, b. 1937
Gord Smith studied architecture and engineering at Sir George Williams University and went on to work with the architectural firm of Lawson Betts and Cash in Montreal. In 1967, he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Victoria from 1972 to 1975 and Visiting Professor in the Department of Art and History, McMaster University, Hamilton in the 1990s. Commissions and collaborations with architects include Webb Zefara Menkes, Arthur Erickson, Bregman Hamman, Leslie Rebanks and Gene Kinoshita. Smith's work is in collections of major institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Queen's University, Musée d'art contemporain, the University of Victoria, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Concordia University, McGill University and many more.

Artist Biography: William Robert Stevenson was born in 20 May 1925 in Eugene, Oregon. His family moved to Minneapolis, MN but he promptly returned to Oregon and Washington during the Great Depression to work in the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Hoping to study Art, his future was sidetracked when he was drafted into the United States Army at age 17 years old in early 1942. Being a strong swimmer, and having worked at stables as a child, he initially served in the last US Cavalry Corps, and also as a Swimming Instructor for the United States Army. A hollow brushed steel cube with sides cut out following a design of organic rectangular shapes. Set akimbo on a steel stand, the cube reflects the light and casts complex shadows. The theme of optical geometry links this new work with this established sculptor's early commissioned work for the Canadian Government Pavilion at Expo '67.
