Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883
By Gorham CO.
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883 Dimensions: 3.5" W × 2.5" D × 1.5" H Materials: Copper with applied silver decoration Marks: Gorham, date letter “P” for 1883 A finely crafted American Aesthetic Movement mixed-metal box by Gorham, executed in copper with sculptural silver appliqué. The domed lid features a dynamic lizard in high relief, accompanied by two playful mice in motion, all arranged above a silvered ground with grasses and textured earth. The decoration is set asymmetrically against the warm copper body, leaving generous areas of polished surface that highlight the contrast between metals. The interior is left plain, showing use consistent with age. The imagery reflects the strong influence of Japanese Meiji-era design on Gorham in the late 19th century. Themes of small animals and naturalistic vignettes were drawn directly from Japanese art, where lizards were regarded as symbols of protection and renewal, and mice were associated with quickness, fertility, and in some contexts, good fortune. Together, they create a whimsical narrative of pursuit, rendered with wit and naturalistic detail. This work exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement credo of “Art for Art’s Sake,” emphasizing beauty, asymmetry, and nature study over traditional allegory. Gorham’s mixed-metal line, developed in the wake of the 1876 Centennial Exposition, sought to rival Tiffany & Co. in innovation and design, producing decorative objects that were both functional and avant-garde. Rare American Western Sculpture “Desert Rat” (1928) by J. Clinton Shepherd
By Gorham CO.
Located in Shippensburg, PA
J. CLINTON SHEPHERD United States, 1888-1975 "The Desert Rat" (1928) Patinated bronze signed "(c) 1928 J. CLINTON SHEPHERD", cold stamped "GORHAM CO FOUNDERS QGCB" Item # 405KOB04A An exceedingly rare cast of J. Clinton Shepherd's study of a Western miner and his pack mule titled "The Desert Rat", it features a tired old-timer with his worn and weathered features trodding along with his pickaxe resting on top of the full pack and a sturdy walking stick in his other hand. The sheer rarity of the cast perhaps is due to the timing of his model, which was modeled in 1928 and started production at Gorham almost in sync with the beginning of the Great Depression. Shepherd saw his income from sculpture dwindle to such a degree that he was forced to begin illustrating thriller novels during the 1930s. The only other model we have seen on the open market was offered at Christie's in New York on November 30th of 1990 (lot 86) with an estimate of $ 10-15,000. An example of this sculpture is recorded in the Smithsonian American Art Museum index of American Art as being preserved in the permanent collection of the University of Delaware (acc. no. 64.2.007); it is also held in the Birmingham Museum of Art (acc. no. 1978.41). Joy Clinton Shepherd was born on September 11, 1888, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Charles and Emma Shepherd. He was the third of five children, and his family lived on Twenty-third Street. His father, a men's suit salesman, enabled Joy to attend college after high school. Joy studied at the University of Missouri at Kansas City before leaving in 1909 to travel to the Northwest with his brother, where they lived with the Crow Indians and learned their customs. In 1910, Joy moved to Chicago and enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago where he graduated in 1914. He subsequently studied at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and afterwards worked as a freelance artist. He married Gail English, a fellow art student, in 1915. In 1916, he joined the Illinois National Reserve as a bugler. Despite a hearing defect, he served until 1919 when he moved to New York City to work as a freelance artist for magazines like Colliers and The Saturday Evening Post. Joy adopted the signature "J. C. Shepherd" and found success throughout the 1920s. He and Gail moved to Westport, Connecticut, and had two children, Joy and Charles. In addition to illustration, he pursued a career as a sculptor of western bronzes. The Great Depression shifted his work to pulp magazine covers...

Rare American Sculpture of “Princeton Tiger” by Alexander Phimister Proctor
By Gorham CO.
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ALEXANDER PHIMSTER PROCTOR American, 1860-1950 "Princeton Tiger" (1910) Dark-brown and autumnal patinated bronze signed in cast "AP PROCTOR 1912", "GORHAM CO FOUNDERS 0454 7" with copyright symbol captured from underlying mold, "79" and "PRINCETON TIGER" to raised edge cast circa 1912 formerly with Graham Gallery of New York (label affixed to underside) Item # 402KMP14C A very early casting from Alexander Phimster Proctor of his "Princeton Tiger". Modeled in 1908-1910, the original monumental pair of these were cast in 1910 and presented to Princeton University Art Museum by the class of 1879 (hence the '79 incised on the front raised edge). They were subsequently cast by Gorham starting in 1912 in two dimensions - 22 3/16" in total width and 9" in total width. The present example is the latter dimension and is cold-stamped "7", noting its very early production. It is finished in a nearly black overall patination that was relieved to show autumnal hues throughout, the tones together emphasizing the surface texture that is captured directly from the early mold. Note the extraordinary surface nuance and exquisite detail. The underside retains a label from Graham Gallery and shows remnants of the core material loosely moving within the void. Museum Holdings: Brooklyn Museum of Art [large version] Cleveland Museum of Art [9" version] Princeton University Art Museum [the monumental original pair] Measurements: 4" H x 9" W x 2 1/2" D Condition Report: Exceedingly good condition, no flaws.
