Grandjean-Jourdan 'Faux Bois' Ceramic Centerpiece Vallauris, 1960s
By Grandjean Jourdan
Located in Tilburg, NL
Grandjean-Jourdan 'Faux Bois' Ceramic Centerpiece, Vallauris, France, 1960s.
Fantastic ceramic centerpiece by pottery artist Eugène Grandjean for his family company Grandjean-Jourdan of the French pottery village Vallauris.
Grandjean was fascinated with the idea of creating pottery that looked like actual olive wood. He experimented with various techniques to create realistic wood textures and eventually developed his own unique style. He would use a special type of clay to create the basic shape of the pottery, then apply glazes and stains to give it a realistic wood grain appearance.
This centerpiece is one of his finest with a very distinct appearance. Although unintentionally, it looks a bit like a backwards looking bird.
Vallauris, a small town in the south of France, is known for its long-standing tradition of pottery. Located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, Vallauris is home to some of the best pottery in the country.
The pottery of Vallauris has been produced for centuries, with some of the earliest pieces being found in the ruins of the nearby Roman villa. The town itself has a rich history that dates back to the 12th century, when it was part of the County of Provence. Over the years, the craft of pottery has been passed down from generation to generation, and today it is still a major part of the local culture and economy.
Vallauris pottery is known for its vibrant colors and unique shapes. The pottery is made from clay that is sourced from the nearby valleys, where it is mixed with other minerals to create different colors and patterns. The pottery is then hand-shaped and decorated with intricate designs. Many pieces are also glazed, giving them a rich, glossy finish.
The local pottery...

Vallauris Ceramic Poker Ashtray Set, Green Glazed with Gilt, France, 1960s
By Vallauris
Located in Glasgow, GB
This rare set of four handcrafted ceramic ashtrays by Vallauris is a striking example of mid-century French design, playfully inspired by the world of poker. Each ashtray is uniquely shaped to represent a card suit—spade, club, diamond, and ace—creating a cohesive yet distinctive collection. The deep malachite-green glaze lends a rich, almost jewel-like quality to the pieces, further accentuated by the bold gold gilt borders that highlight the shape of each piece.
Housed in their original faux lizard-skin presentation box, these ashtrays have been well preserved. The glaze remains glossy and deep, with no apparent signs of ash residue, suggesting they were rarely, if ever, used for their intended purpose. The gold detailing exhibits some minor surface wear, but it retains its brightness, adding to the vintage charm. Measuring approximately 8 cm in length and width, with a height of 3 cm, each piece is perfectly sized for tabletop display.
While originally designed as ashtrays, their sculptural forms and opulent finish make them equally suited for use as decorative objects or small trinket dishes...
