Gustave Riquet Art

French, 1866-1937
Gustave David Riquet was born on June 26 1866 he died on July 27 1938 He was a French painter. Gustave Riquet was the son of a merchant from Nîmes. He studied in the workshops of Carolus-Duran , Dubufe and Galland. In 1897, he was appointed professor of painting and decorative composition at the Regional School of Fine Arts in Amiens . This is how he became Amiens by adoption, and remained so until his death. His work, in Amiens and in the region, is important: easel paintings, watercolors or illustrations and, above all, monumental painting. Most of this work is devoted to religious art. Pierre Dubois, in his article published in the Journal d'Amiens in 1924, described the painter as follows: "The composition, impeccably ordered and drawn, of his hagiographical pages or his allegories, is always simple, very readable: no stage, extra accessories, “frills”; art is only religious if it is honest, clearly demonstrative, without affectation. The colors, provided by an extensive palette, are frankly posed, their harmony obtained without the tricks, so frequent, the "tricks" of the trade. This idealism of conception and this loyalty of technique apparently M. Riquet owes [them] to the great Florentine primitives and to the English "Pre-Raphaelites" of the middle of the 19th century . century: these are two groups of noble and powerful masters. But our painter, by taking them as advisers, knew how to defend his own and quite modern temperament. » He became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1908. He was also an officer of Public Instruction. He died in Nîmes onJuly 27, 1938, still residing in Amiens.

Amphora
By George Tzannes
Located in New York, NY
This still-life fresco painting is part of a series depicting ancient Greek amphoras and pottery vases from the archaeological site of Paliopoli, in the Greek island of Kythera, known as the place where Aphrodite was born and emerged from the sea. Tzannes used his own fresco technique where the pigment is imbedded in the slab as it dries. The outcome is a sensual, almost silky surface with subtle gray and white tones. The drawing is imbedded in the concrete surface, nearly as an ancient fossil. The amphoras are drawn from the original Minoan pottery...

Yellow and Red, realistic, colorful still life with cabbage and onion
By Douglas Newton
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil paint on canvas Doug Newton’s hyper-real paintings observe reality, explore translucency, reflections and luminosity, and dazzle the viewer with all the ways light can transform our perceptions. His subject matter concentrates on still lives of food, toys, candy and household objects. In addition to many group shows across the country, Mr. Newton’s show, “HARD CANDY and other confections” represents his fifth solo exhibition. His paintings have been collected in numerous private collections. Mr. Newton resides in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Sonia Coman writes in her essay, Doug Newton’s hard candy: the confection of painting Doug Newton’s paintings are about… painting. The hyperrealist technique of trompe l’oeil or “trick the eye” is knowingly playful. It simultaneously calls attention to the illusion of a different material—for example, translucent candy wrappers—and the reality of the layers of paint, masterfully applied to the canvas. In that, Newton’s paintings pay homage to an esteemed series of trompe l’oeil masters, from Inquisition-era Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán to Gilded-Age American painter William Michael Harnett...

Gustave Riquet (1866-1938) A bunch of dahlias, signed oil on canvas
By Gustave Riquet
Located in Paris, FR
Gustave Riquet (1866-1938) A bunch of dahlias, oil on canvas signed upper left 38 x 46 cm In good condition In its original vintage frame (damaged, numerous lacks in the gilding, see photographs please) 48 x 56 cm This bouquet of dahlias is striking in its originality and execution. The painter has composed a harmonious color scheme of shades of yellow and orange, his flowers and their reflection are real pieces of painting and especially the composition where the frame is doubled in the upper part, creating an effect of mise en abyme. This explains the choice to keep the original frame even if it is not in perfect condition, the idea is to keep the work as the painter wanted it. about the artist : Gustave David Riquet was born on June 26 1866 he died on July 27 1938 He was a French painter.
