Designer Friedel Wauer, was a pioneering German lampshade manufacturer and designer, widely recognized as the "grandfather of cocoon lamps". Company: Wauer founded the company Goldkant-Leuchten (initially named Cocoon-Leuchten International) in Germany in 1946. The company operated until 1994. Innovation: He is credited by peers and the Italian lighting company FLOS with developing a groundbreaking technique in 1952 for applying a specialized synthetic polymer spray onto a metal wireframe to create lampshades. This process was inspired by a silk worm's "self-wrapping" and the material itself was originally developed for "mothballing" naval ships.
