Harold Feinstein was born in Coney Island in 1931. He began his career in photography in 1946 at the age of 15 he borrowed a Rolleiflex camera from a neighbor and set forth to record the sights and the people surrounding him. Within four short years, Edward Steichen, an early supporter, had purchased his work for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Steichen invited him to contribute to the Modern's exhibition The Family of Man, perhaps the most famous in the history of photography, its accompanying catalog is one of the most popular photography books ever published. With camera in hand he dropped out of high school at 16, and, two years later joined the Photo League, a collective of socially conscious photographers whose members and supporters included Weegee, Richard Avedon, Edward Weston and Robert Frank. He became a prominent figure in the vanguard of the early New York City street photography scene where he exhibited at Helen Gee’s Limelight Gallery and was a designer for historic Blue Note Records...
