Henri Jacques Delpy Art

Jacques Henri Delpy Barbizon Painting “Bordes De Riviere”
By Henri Jacques Delpy
Located in Dallas, TX
Jacques Henri Delpy (French, 1877-1977) Bords De Riviere, oil on panel. Sight dimensions: Height 15.25 inches (38.4 cm) Width 24.25 inches (60.7 cm) Framed dimensions: 21.5 X 30.75 inches. Signed lower right: H.J. Delpy Provenance: Frost & Reed, London. With lavandières (Clothes washers) “Au Bords De Rivière” (On the side of the River) along with a fisherman in a boat and another figure tending to his boat; Delpy stays close to his Barbizon artistic style. He doesn’t stop there adding a farmhouse and waddling ducks in the water. All in all, it’s a beautiful day on the river with blue skies and grass and trees in every shade of green. A truly fine Impressionist Barbizon painting! Condition: Excellent. One 1 inch scratch in painted lower left corner. Some previous repairs to frame. Jacques-Henri Delpy was born in Bois-le-Roi (Seine-et-Marne) in 1877. His father, Hippolyte-Camille Delpy (1842-1910), was a very prolific artist; a landscapist and engraver, he was influenced by the Barbizon School and was a pupil of Daubigny (1817-1878), with whom he enjoyed painting expeditions on the elder painter’s boat. However, he also knew Pissarro and Cézanne, and his work shows the influence of their brushwork and use of color. He went on to exhibit at the Expo Universelle of 1900. His son, Jacques-Henri, was trained by his father; his work is mainly in the style of Daubigny with a slight impressionist flavour. Both father and son produced pictures of similar subjects and in the same idiom: serene and timeless idylls, illuminated by the sun of a golden age. However, Jacques-Henri also painted still life subjects in a much more modern idiom; for example, Poppies in a vase...
