Henrietta Dunn Mears was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 28, 1877. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City and Massachusetts with Hawthorne and Pape. Mears moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1930, and shortly thereafter, appears to have abandoned her art career. Upon moving to California in 1945, Mears lived there until she died in Sunland on May 15, 1970.

He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor.
