ABOUT THE ARTIST Painter and printmaker Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Japanese 'shin hanga' (New Print) movement. In 1891 he was adopted by his art teacher Yoshida Kasaburo in Fukuoka and took his surname. In 1893 he went to Kyoto to study painting, and the following year to Tokyo to join Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha private school; he also became a member of the Meiji Fine Arts Society. These institutions taught and advocated Western-style painting, greatly influencing Yoshida’s artistic development. In 1899 Yoshida had his first American exhibition at Detroit Museum of Art (now Detroit Institute of Art), making the first of many visits to the US and Europe. In 1902 he helped reorganize the Meiji Fine Arts Society, renaming it the Taiheiyo-Gakai (Pacific Painting...

Located in Burbank, CA

Original handmade Japanese woodblock print. Tateyama Betsuzan. We see smoke issuing from huts on a mountain expanse, a region of snow nearby. A cloud hovers left and right, and every surrounding peak has different colors and textures. The printing is exceptional, especially in the depiction of the clouds. From the series Twelve Scenes in the Japanese Alps (Nihon Arupusu juni dai no uchi). Signed by the artist in pencil and in brush. Sealed "jizuri" (self-printed). Hiroshi Yoshida began his career as a painter, and first traveled to America in 1899, when he sold paintings to clients that included Charles Lang Freer, to whom he sold a painting of a cherry tree that is now at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Yoshida became a printmaker in the 1920s as a way for the rising middle class to be able to purchase fine artworks that he created as multiples via the ancient woodblock printing tradition of Japan. Yoshida also curated the famous 1930 Toledo Museum circuit exhibition of 370 shin hanga prints that included many of his own works. Original handmade Japanese woodblock print. "Sumidagawa, kiri." Boats ply the Sumida River in the mist, while passengers await a ferry at a landing in the right foreground.
