A tabletop-sized solid bronze casting of Michelangelo's "Winged David", on a solid marble base. You can see his giant-killer sling "slung" over his shoulder. Fine detail. This came out of a collection of neoclassical grand tour souvenirs, owned by collector Daniel Glaser of New Orleans, Louisiana (from his estate). Back in the day, wealthy travelers in Europe often purchased sculptures and other mementos of the sites they visited. Nando Kallweit is a German sculptor working in bronze and oak. Kallweit carves the original piece from a piece of oak using a chainsaw. The oak marque is then used to create a cavity in clay and sand into which the bronze is poured. The resultant bronze is particularly organic and tactile. The wood grain is apparent, as are the cut marks where the chainsaw has bitten into the wood.
