The Secret Garden (Abstract Contemporary Painting, Framed)
By G. Campbell Lyman
Located in New Orleans, LA
(Comes professionally framed in a solid maple floater frame, ready to hang) Artist's Statement "This series of intensely colorful paintings was begun a couple of years back in reaction to the gray oppressive weight that had descended like a pall on the American scene. I wanted to make paintings about nothing but pure delight, in honor of the fact that beneath the fog of germs and political antagonism, we still eat, laugh, love and if we're wise, acknowledge how spectacularly fortunate we are -- at least for now, in this time and place, despite the problems. For me, the colors, forms and brushstrokes here feel exuberant without suggesting an unnerving chaos. I have purposely used unlikely color combinations that despite their dissonance seem to work together. I don't feel this is a time to be making brooding works that reflect the problems we are working our way through; we all know about this. On the contrary, I think it's a time for art...

Done in an Asian calligraphy style Jackie Battenfield was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1950, received her MFA in Visual Art from Syracuse University (1978) and a BS from Pennsylvania State University (1971). She currently lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A survey of her graphic works, Moments of Change, was presented at the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art at the University of Richmond (2009), and will travel to the University of Arizona Museum of Art, Tucson in 2011. Galleries throughout the United States represent her work including: Addison-Ripley, Washington, D.C.; Addington Gallery, Chicago, Illinois; Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Larchmont, New York; Michele Mosko Fine Art, Denver, Colorado; and DM Contemporary, New York. Battenfield has been greatly influenced by Asian art and culture. This is evident in the prints, monotypes, works on paper, and paintings on canvas created by the artist, which are often described as musical, gestural, and spontaneous. Jackie Battenfield is an artist known for her luminous paintings and prints of natural forces. Her works explore her fascination with the most abstract qualities of landscape--storms, clouds, brush fires, and water ripples. She has been working with handmade papers from Asia for over twenty years. She relates her mark making to the array of expressive materials and textures imbedded in the paper, such as bamboo leaves, horsehair, and gold leaf, or the rippled edge of a handmade paper. This work is somewhat reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionist work of Sam Francis. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Award (1991) and the Warren Tanner Award (1996). Her work is represented in many collections worldwide including the New York Public Library, NY; The Zimmerli Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, NJ; Palmer Museum, University Park, PA; Museum of Art at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ; and the United States Embassy Collections in Brazil, Cambodia, Croatia, Jamaica, and Peru E X H I B I T I O N S Solo & Two Artist Shows 2018 Chasing the Sky: Jackie Battenfield & Jennifer Falck Linssen Chicago Art Source, Chicago, IL 2017 Branched, Jackie Battenfield & Julia Bloom, Addison/Ripley Fine Art, Washington, D.C. 2015 Mirage, Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Larchmont, NY 2014 Another Garden, Wave Hill, Bronx, New York 2013 Town & Country, Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art, Sarasota, FL (with Deborah Brown) 2012 Field Notes, Addison/Ripley Fine Art, Washington, D.C. 2011 Moments of Change, University of Arizona Museum, Tucson, AZ P E R M A N E N T A R T C O...

Questions About Jackie Battenfield Abstract Paintings
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
The Jackie bag is called that because of Jacqueline "Jackie" Kennedy Onassis. Her marriage to John F. Kennedy made her the First Lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, and in 1968, she married shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Jackie Kennedy was frequently photographed carrying the Gucci G1244, which Alessandro Michele renamed in her honor in 2020. Shop a collection of Gucci Jackie 1961 bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Whether or not the Gucci Jackie is a classic is largely a matter of personal opinion. The bag debuted in 1999, and most people would not consider a design this recent to be classic. However, the Jackie is a reinterpretation of the Constance bag that came out in the 1950s. You'll find a variety of Gucci Jackie bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023
The Gucci Jackie 1961 was released in 2020. Designer Alessandro Michele based the trapezoidal handbag on the design of the original Gucci G1244, which came out in 1961. Michele called his new bag Jackie after Jackie Kennedy Onassis, the former First Lady, who was often photographed with the original G1244. Shop a collection of Gucci Jackie 1961 bags on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
There isn't much known about what Jackie Kennedy's wedding ring looked like because she typically wore only her engagement ring from John F. Kennedy. That ring featured a 2.88-carat diamond and a 2.84-carat emerald, set in a toi et moi design accented by marquise-cut and round-cut diamonds on the side. Van Cleef & Arpels created the custom piece. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Van Cleef & Arpels rings.
