Inland Crossing 35
By Hyunmee Lee
Located in Salt Lake City, UT
The gestural paintings of Hyunmee Lee are sumptuously minimal. Rich forms advance from buttery canvases like an abstract garden. Gauzy veils of paint hover like soft air against the ebony weight of matter. Light peeks through translucent shapes like sunlight illuminating soft mist. Texture swirls and echoes across the canvas as if carved by waves or eroded by the wind. The viewer, invited into a realm of contemplation and meditation, is surprised to look away and see the physical world existing in only three dimensions. But perhaps that is precisely the experience the artist would like the viewer to have.
In her current exhibition, Touch, on display at the Phillips Gallery...

"Abstract Composition (Black, Yellow and Grey)" Mixed Media Painting
By Suki Maguire
Located in New York, NY
This piece is an abstract composition done with mixed media, oil and acrylic paints on paper. The artist explores an incredible world filled with color and expressive brushstrokes. The lines and texture create a mature abstract composition as Suki Maguire has been painting in this field since the 1970s. Her joy is the expression and we can find these notes displayed vividly in this piece. This piece comes displayed in a modern light wood floating frame under glass and is signed lower right.
Art measures 8 x 6 in
Frame measures 17 x 12.25 in
There is a great potential for discovery in Maguire's world of symbols, but a passing glance will not do, you have to allow your gaze to linger on this part and that of each painting so that your subconscious will have the opportunity to retrieve the elusive forms that seem to be hiding within the more obvious shapes. This holds true even in those works that incorporate letters of the Korean or Latin alphabet, which serve as glyphs bearing some symbolic meaning that goes beyond the mere representation of sound. She has exhibited internationally in Seoul, Nantucket, New York, and Italy. Her styles and materials have ranged from realism to abstract, from water and oil colors to acrylics and coffee grounds.

Jackie Battenfield was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1950, received her MFA in Visual
Art from Syracuse University (1978) and a BS from Pennsylvania State University (1971). She
currently lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A survey of her graphic works, Moments of Change, was presented at the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art at the University of Richmond (2009), and will travel to the University of Arizona Museum of Art, Tucson in 2011. Galleries throughout the United States represent her work including: Addison-Ripley, Washington, D.C.; Addington Gallery, Chicago, Illinois; Kenise Barnes Fine Art, Larchmont, New York; Michele Mosko Fine Art, Denver, Colorado; and DM Contemporary, New York.
Battenfield has been greatly influenced by Asian art and culture. This is evident in the prints, monotypes, works on paper, and paintings on canvas created by the artist, which are often described as musical, gestural, and spontaneous. Jackie Battenfield is an artist known for her luminous paintings and prints of natural forces.
Her works explore her fascination with the most abstract qualities of landscape--storms, clouds,
brush fires, and water ripples. She has been working with handmade papers from Asia for over twenty years. She relates her mark making to the array of expressive materials and textures imbedded in the paper, such as bamboo leaves, horsehair, and gold leaf, or the rippled edge of a handmade paper. This work is somewhat reminiscent of the Abstract Expressionist work of Sam Francis. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Award (1991) and the Warren Tanner Award (1996). Her work is represented in many collections worldwide including the New York Public Library, NY; The Zimmerli Art Museum, Montclair Art Museum, NJ; Palmer Museum, University Park, PA; Museum of Art at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ; and the United States Embassy Collections in Brazil, Cambodia, Croatia, Jamaica, and Peru

Questions About Jackie Battenfield Abstract Paintings
- Why is it called the Jackie bag?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023The Jackie bag is called that because of Jacqueline "Jackie" Kennedy Onassis. Her marriage to John F. Kennedy made her the First Lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, and in 1968, she married shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Jackie Kennedy was frequently photographed carrying the Gucci G1244, which Alessandro Michele renamed in her honor in 2020. Shop a collection of Gucci Jackie 1961 bags on 1stDibs.
- Is the Gucci Jackie a classic?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Whether or not the Gucci Jackie is a classic is largely a matter of personal opinion. The bag debuted in 1999, and most people would not consider a design this recent to be classic. However, the Jackie is a reinterpretation of the Constance bag that came out in the 1950s. You'll find a variety of Gucci Jackie bags on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023The Gucci Jackie 1961 was released in 2020. Designer Alessandro Michele based the trapezoidal handbag on the design of the original Gucci G1244, which came out in 1961. Michele called his new bag Jackie after Jackie Kennedy Onassis, the former First Lady, who was often photographed with the original G1244. Shop a collection of Gucci Jackie 1961 bags on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024There isn't much known about what Jackie Kennedy's wedding ring looked like because she typically wore only her engagement ring from John F. Kennedy. That ring featured a 2.88-carat diamond and a 2.84-carat emerald, set in a toi et moi design accented by marquise-cut and round-cut diamonds on the side. Van Cleef & Arpels created the custom piece. On 1stDibs, find a variety of Van Cleef & Arpels rings.
