Jamali Paintings
Pakistani, b. 1944
Jamali is an established, professional New York Artist. His complex surfaces and mystical imagery have been compared to the neo-expressionists Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. His gestural techniques link him to Jackson Pollock and the New York school. But the pre-eminent art critic Donald Kuspit has seen that Jamali's singular method requires its own name, "Mystical Expressionism".
Jamali created "Mystical Expressionism" the 6 ism in the history of art, a marriage of contemporary consciousness and art's most ancient traditions. Jamali's fusion of these opposites--the contemporary and the timeless--has produced a life work unmatched in its scope, variety, and spiritual depth. He has innovated several unique painting rituals and styles including; painting with his feet; Fresco Tempera; Pigmentation on Cork and Pigment Dispersion. He has attracted a select international and circle of collectors, drawn by his mystical style and charismatic persona.
Mystical Expressionism is a new mode of art-making that combines the scientific insights of our new age with humankind's ancient wisdom. Obeying the dream guide who set him on the path to art, Jamali himself has named his life's work Art & Peace. Through all these works, persistent themes and mythic imagery define a singular artistic vision. Jamali's paintings are inhabited by dream figures that appear and then fade away. Mothers, sons, lovers, and dream guides — these are the characters of Jamali's visionary cosmos. His hieroglyphs and inscriptions promise revelation without disclosing their truths easily. Always dwelling in the tension between image and abstraction, Jamali draws us toward "the beautiful resolution of opposing forces" — the moment of transcendence in which art coincides with peace.
The source of Jamali's art and his life, lies in the primordial spiritual traditions of the East. In his birthplace Peshawar, the Asian crossroads city, Jamali drank in Buddhist, Hindu, and Sufi ideas of the sacredness of being. He spent years of his youth with a mysterious desert people who still respect the shaman's powers. But he also studied modern physics and engineering. Jamali is the first to incorporate the paradoxes of quantum mechanics into contemporary art.
In recent work, Jamali explores new materials and artistic ideas. In his paintings on cork, he creates a kind of negative surface, exploiting the cork's readiness to absorb and resist pigment. His photographs are quiet statements of profound spirituality.
From the beginning, Jamali has made his own path. He has pursued an "ecological vision" of art's place in contemporary life, art as an essential part of our contemporary household and the vehicle of a new mythology. Jamali now beckons a wider public to take part in that vision. Join me, he says, in Art & Peace.to

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Four Figures Playing Polo in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting four figures playing polo. Polo, also called 'chagun,' was the sport of kings and princes of central Asia and Iran, and the sport probably originated there in the 6th century BCE. Polo matches appear in a large number of early Persian texts, including in the writings of the 10th century epic writer Abu l-Qasim al-Firdawsi: He describes numerous polo matches in his famous 'Shahnameh' (The Persian Book of Kings). This particular illumination also is closely related to an example held at the Smithsonian Museum of Asian Art: a folio from 'Guy u Chawgan' (The ball and the polo-mallet) which shows a polo game with the dervish and the shah.

A Persian miniature is a small Persian painting on paper, whether a book illustration or a separate work of art intended to be kept in an album of such works called a muraqqa. The techniques are broadly comparable to the Western and Byzantine traditions of miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. Although there is an equally well-established Persian tradition of wall-painting, the survival rate and state of preservation of miniatures is better, and miniatures are much the best-known form of Persian painting in the West, and many of the most important examples are in Western, or Turkish, museums. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, receiving Chinese influence after the Mongol conquests, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tradition continued, under some Western influence, after this, and has many modern exponents. The Persian miniature was the dominant influence on other Islamic miniature traditions, principally the Ottoman miniature...

Persian Illuminated Miniature with Three Hunters on Horseback in a Landscape
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The present illuminated folio page contains a fine miniature depicting three figures hunting while on horseback, an image meant to accompany a historic epic. During the medieval period, hunting was an important pastime of male nobility throughout the Islamic world. The Quran itself explicitly endorses hunting and the use of animals to aid in capturing prey: "Lawful to you are foodstuffs that are good to eat and any game that, at your wish, is captured by beasts of prey which train as you do dogs, according to the method that Allah has taught you, after you have spoken the name of Allah over it." (Q 6:4) Muslim princes and nobles enjoyed the chase of the prey via horseback, using bow and arrow, crossbows, and blowpipes to capture their prey Horseback riding itself trained young men in the necessary skills for armed combat and warfare, developing their speed and strength.
