Archibald Knox' Liberty Celtic ‘Beowulf’ Planter
By Archibald Knox, Liberty & Co., James Carter
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An early 20th century Arts and Crafts style Celtic planter or jardiniere and pedestal in terracotta after a design for Liberty’s London (stamped) by celebrated designer Archibald Knox.
Titled ‘Beowulf’, this large Celtic plant pot designed by Knox was manufactured for Liberty’s by J. Carter and Co, as is stamped on the socle. Carters made stone garden ware and terracotta for Liberty between 1900 and 1910.
Often unstamped, Celtic style planters like these are often mistakenly attributed to the Compton Pottery. However, we can be certain that this one was made for the luxury department store in London due to the ‘Liberty & Co’ stamp on the inside.
Archibald Knox (1864-1933) was a pioneer of modern 20th century design. He was Liberty’s primary designer at the height of their success during the early 20thcentury, his balance of Arts and Crafts, Modernism, Celtic Revival...

Red Ice Block Tongs
By John Morfis
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
An oil painting of an antique pair of tongs, meant for use during ice fishing. Suspended from a small rope, hanging from a single nail, against a grey backdrop. Brushstrokes can be seen in the gray of the background, but are harder to make out on the subject. Morfis paints in an extremely refined, realist approach.
Painting dimensions: 25 x 19 inches
Framed dimensions: 30 x 24 x 1.5 inches
Available at Grenning Gallery.
BIOGRAPHY
John Morfis was born in Glen Cove, Long Island in 1976. His humble beginnings made pursuing a career in art difficult and paradoxically necessary. Fixated on making things aesthetically pleasing, John made an extreme departure from his family life when he chose to base his life on art. Surrounded by mechanics, welders, and otherwise trade workers John had a tough time expressing his interest in a world much more utilitarian and much less expressive and impractical.
With an extraordinary desire to be an artist and a grant awarded, John was able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from the University of Hartford in 1998. While there John studied oil painting under American realist Stephen Brown.
John’s first solo show took place in 2007 at the Ellen Traut Collection Gallery in Hartford, CT and was a near sell out. Since then John has had success up and down the northeastern coast of the United States working with various galleries and collectors. His work has also appeared in various group shows at the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut.

Trompe L'oeil Airbrush Painting on Canvas Duck Decoy Fishing Lure James Carter
By James Carter
Located in Surfside, FL
Provenance: Madison Gallery (Madison Connecticut) bears their label verso.
Hunting and fishing cabin themed artwork in a hyper realist or photo realist style.
James Carter (Born 1948) is active/lives in Connecticut. James O Carter is known for Trompe l'oeil still life painting. James Carter is known for his for his airbrush acrylic paintings, serigraphs and lithographs. Some of his paintings have written text, and his style combines carefully controlled trompe l'oeil and abstract Surrealism influences.
James Carter was born in Port Chester, New York, in 1948. He studied at Silvermine College of Art in Connecticut and graduated with a B.F.A. from the Maryland Institute of Art. Carter’s paintings and prints have been exhibited at the Zenith Gallery, Washington, D.C., the Horizon Gallery, New York, and the Bell Gallery, Greenwich, Connecticut. His still lifes display the influence of Surrealist painters of the 1930s such as Rene Magritte and Max Ernst. Like the Surrealists, Carter juxtaposes unexpected objects – teacups, whales, and blue skies, for example – which often sit uncomfortably within his pictorial space. But he has also been influenced by the late-nineteenth-century American trompe l’oeil painters William Harnett...
