James Lloyd Sculptures
British, 1904-1974
Lloyd was born in Alsager, Cheshire. He had worked on his father's farm until the age of 19, when he too joined the police force. Lloyd had a variety of jobs before the war until he was accepted for the famous and exclusive British Army regiment of the Coldstream Guards. He served with distinction in his regiment overseas during the war. On demobilisation he married Nancy, she was a teenager and he in his forties, he returned to the land and took a job as - a wagonner- in Shropshire.
Although he had done some paintings as a young man, it was not until he was forty, that he began to paint in earnest. He and his family moved to Skirpenbeck, East Riding of Yorkshire in 1950. He took on the job as a cowman and painted by night at the kitchen table. Lloyd began to produce so many paintings - laboriously constructed, dot-by-dot, in their naîve pointillism - that his wife Nancy, who was his severest critic, decided it was time that Jim's work was seen by a wider public than his family. Without telling Jim, she wrote to Sir Herbert Read, who paid the artist a visit and left with a couple of new purchases. Read also borrowed some to send to show to a group of London galleries. In 1958, at the age of fifty-three, James held his first one-man show at Arthur Jeffress Gallery. All but two of the 32 paintings were quickly sold.
The rapidly expanding Lloyd family (eight children, and one who died young) moved to a council house further into the village and Jim took a job with the Derwent Plastics Company at Stamford Bridge, the money was better and the hours easier, he did shift work so he could paint by day and work by night. He devoted all his spare time (except for that spent at the pub) to painting. He never painted in a studio; he would usually just paint at the kitchen table.
In 1961 he was commissioned by the York City Art Gallery under the Evelyn Award Scheme to paint the view of Cliffords Tower, York for the gallery's collection - his first work in a public collection. L.S. Lowry also produced a painting of Cliffords Tower.
At the closure of Arthur Jeffress Gallery, James Lloyd was taken on by the Portal Gallery, where his paintings still remain. In 1963 Eric Lister of the Portal Gallery introduced James to film director Ken Russell. The result was that the BBC Monitor unit made a television documentary film about his life and work, 'The dotty world of James Lloyd'. Two years later Lloyd was chosen to play, the part of Henri Rousseau in Ken Russell's 'Monitor' film on the great French naîve painter.
The photographer, David Bailey, bought several paintings by Lloyd and became a very good friend. When his book 'Goodbye Baby and Amen', an album of Bailey's portraits of celebrities of the 60's was published, Jim featured prominently.to

Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure

Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure
Wim van der Kant (1949, Kampen) is a selftaught artist. Next to his busy profession as a teacher at a high school, he intensively practises his profession as a sculptor. Only when his work would measure up to his own standards, he decided to present it to the rest of the world. In 1995, he exhibited for the first time with Morren Galleries. Van der Kant desires to sculpt young people who still stand uninhibited and curiously in life. The reason he chooses to sculpt boys is, because he is one himself, this way the subject is closer to him. The anatomy of his figures testify of perfectionism. Van der Kant's subjects show similarities with the sculptures from the Greek and Roman antiquity...

Brutalist Abstract Sculpture, Gilded Steel and Bronze James Bearden American Mod
By James Bearden
Located in Surfside, FL
Wall-hanging sculpture: blackened steel, fused bronze, solvent dyes, abstract form, USA; Signed; 20 x 8 x 3 1/4
Suggesting archaeological artifacts from the future, these sculptures and functional pieces have been described as post-apocalyptic and brutalist in style, and they’re capturing the attention of collectors and galleries across the country.
Bearden was born in Alabama but grew up in Des Moines and received bachelor’s degrees in fine art and visual communications from Grand View University. He worked in graphic design for 20 years, most of that time as an award-winning art director at Flynn Wright advertising agency. In 2007, at the age of 43, he decided to leave that job and focus on fine art.
A longtime painter, Bearden found himself drawn to sculpture.
The work of Pablo Picasso, Harry Bertoia, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson particularly inspired him.
His early pieces were smooth, abstract shapes made from wire and sheets of steel painted with bright colors, evoking pop art. That felt like a dead end, he says, so he went in the opposite direction, building both organic and architectonic forms encrusted with craggy texture and charred, corroded or patinated finishes.
In 2012 Bearden entered his first public art competition. His sculpture, Paths Unite, was accepted for Clive’s Art Along the Trail and then purchased for the city’s permanent collection. He also has outdoor sculptures at Blank Park Zoo and Lowe Art Center in Marion, as well as in Ames, Coralville and Plymouth, Minnesota.
Rago auction brought Bearden’s sculptures to the attention of Larry Weinberg, owner of Weinberg Modern in New York. Weinberg began collecting Bearden’s work for himself and his gallery. This past winter, he curated a solo show of Bearden’s sculptures and functional pieces at 1stdibs Gallery in the New York Design Center. Weinberg compares Bearden’s style to the brutalist furniture of Paul Evans (1931-1987), a midcentury modern craftsman described as “the father of the modern art-furniture movement.”
Brutalism as an architectural style emerged after World War II and was characterized by the use of rough concrete as the primary building material. The term has been revived in the past few years to apply to a raw, un-prettified approach to web design as well as to the 1960s-1970s interior design aesthetic that emphasized rugged textures, distressed metals, unfinished concrete and industrial materials.
He went on to create cabinet-like boxes that he categorized as Dwelling Boxes, Harry Boxes (a tribute to the late sculptor and modern furniture designer Harry Bertoia), Barnacle Boxes...

Spanish Catalan Xavier Corbero Bronze Steel Architectural Abstract Sculpture
By Xavier Corberó i Olivella
Located in Surfside, FL
Xavier Corberó Olivella (1935 – 2017)
Estructuras Continual

5 X 8 X 7 inches approximately. The pieces are kinetic and moveable so dimensions are a bit variable.
This is accompanied by a hand signed and dated photo certificate of the piece. A silver gelatin photograph. The photo is badly torn.
Xavier Corberó i Olivella (1935 – 2017) was a prominent Catalan artist, best known for monumental public sculpture and his palatial house complex in Esplugues de Llobregat near Barcelona. He has been described as "widely considered the most important Catalan artist since Antonio Gaudí," as "one of Spain’s most celebrated sculptors" and as having "perhaps influenced Barcelona more than any artist since Gaudí." Corberó's grandfather Pere Corberó i Casals (1875-1959) was an entrepreneur and artist whose works included the bronze memorial on the birthplace of Enrique Granados, also in Lleida. He was a cofounder of Barcelona's association for the promotion of decorative arts, a precursor to the Design Museum, now known as the Foment de les Arts i el Disseny. The Corberó foundry produced sculptures by prominent Catalan sculptors of the time such as Pablo Gargallo, Josep Viladomat and Frederic Marès. It was also an industrial and commercial business that sold bronze doors, chandeliers, fountains, and other decorative items, with a showroom in downtown Barcelona at Rambla de Catalunya 105, in a building designed by Arnau Calvet i Peyronill, and a workshop nearby at Carrer Aribau 103.
Pere's son and Corberó's father, Xavier Corberó i Trepat (1901-1981), also worked in the family bronze...
