Minimalist, abstract three dimensional wall sculpture in dark oxidized metal “DNA” made by Joe Wheaton in 2019 19 x 12 x 3.5 inches, oxidized steel Hangs of a French cleat, sculpture is lightweight (weighs about 5 lbs.) Signed, verso Joe Wheaton’s unique sculptural designs welded from dark, oxidized brass or brilliant silver steel showcase a contradictory set of relationships; “beautiful yet menacing, “threatening yet delicate” as described by the artist. Wheaton builds his metal compositions using a language of strokes and patterns. Geometric spears, disks and quadrangles alternate with wispy, sharp edged lines that trail off quietly to an undefined point. This visual sweep can be likened to the art of calligraphy, echoing the artist’s interest in early Asian arts and ceramics, as well as printmaking. Artist Statement: Familiar yet strange, beautiful yet menacing, threatening yet delicate. Reaching and solid, my work traverses many contradictions. As in life, beautiful lines have sharp edges, precarious forms balance with great certainty yet are vulnerable to nature's menacing ways. I am interested in using recognizable materials and relationships in configurations that will serve to re-evaluate how one perceives what might at first seem obvious. Dark forms stand in front of their ever-changing shadows. Lines motion and engage, but are like life, elusive and mysterious. Sidney Gordin Untitled, 1958 Incised with initials Welded Steel 15 x 10 1/2 x 6 inches Provenance: Eric Firestone Gallery, New York On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. Robert Cook’s Splash sculpture draws inspiration from the iconic photograph of a drop of milk creating a circle and splash in a pool of milk. This fleeting moment of suspended motion sparked Cook’s exploration of how to capture such dynamic energy in a static form. Robert Cook was a great American sculptor and his works are in many museums and his iconic Dinoseras piece commands a spot on the street of New York at 51st Street. Important to note with this work that it is unique and there are no other casts. Cook sculpted in wax and when he cast this destroyed the wax and there was no mould. Very few sculptors work in this manner and it speaks to a very pure and altruistic form of sculpture. If perhaps he had been more commercially minded he would have done large editions but instead he valued singularity as in nature. In Splash, Cook freezes a moment of kinetic energy, capturing the elegant tension between impact and expansion. The sculpture embodies both grace and chaos, with a fluidity that suggests movement at the very instant it’s frozen in time. Cook’s mastery of his medium allows this dynamic moment to be immortalized in bronze, creating a powerful and emotional resonance that transcends the physical form, making Splash both a formal and philosophical exploration of time, space, and motion.
