John Martin studied at the Royal Academy Schools and later became an elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). He regularly participates at Royal Academy exhibitions. Martin’s paintings reflect a sense of place and atmosphere. Brian Sewell, Art Critic of the Evening Standard, said of Martin’s work, ”The gentle honesty of his observation and a technique that matches it produce pictures without irritating mannerisms or striving effects.” Martin has been the recipient of many awards; Stowells of Chelsea Prize Winner, David Murray Landscape Scholarship, WH Patterson Prize, the Fabrica Painting Prize, the Windsor and Newton Best Artist Award and more recently Martin was awarded the de Laszlo medal at the RBA and became a Senior Member in 2016.

He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor. He made ends meet by working in industrial design and illustration.
