John Garth More Clocks

John Garth grew up in Topeka, Kansas and attended Washburn University, Art Institute of Chicago and graduated from Yale University in 1914. He studied at the Arts Student League and in Europe from 1914–15, including being in Berlin, working with Renoyitski and Conrad Fehrand. Garth taught at the Roberts college in Constantinople for eight months, returned briefly to Topeka and then was in Hawaii in 1916. He served in World War I, then settled in San Francisco, California. Garth temporarily was art director of the Pacific Railways Advertising Company and from 1920–35 conducted the Garth School of Art.

19th Century English Twin Fusee Bracket Clock. Clock features carved foliate scroll and gadroon mahogany case on four bun feet. Case showcases a rich grain and carved acanthus scrollwork embellishing the base and pediment. A fine Regency longcase clock in the form of a domestic regulator in an architectural mahogany case with inset panels of satinwood and ebonized mouldings. The case of this clock shows the distinct influence of Thomas Hope, the eminent antiquarian and designer who was inspired by the Greek and Egyptian designs. The 12in square brass dial has a silvered finish and is engraved with Roman chapters and subsidiary second’s dial. The dial is signed within the lower section 'Barwise, London'. The eight day duration movement is of the highest quality, with five pillars, dead beat escapement, maintaining power and hour strike on a bell.
