Josef Israels Art

1824-1911

Jozef Israëls was brought up in the traditions of the Jewish faith and destined for the rabbinate. His interest in drawing grew stronger with age however, and in 1840 his father finally relented, sending him to Amsterdam. There he spent his days working in the studio of Jan Kruseman and his evenings painting at the Royal Academy under Jan Pieneman, both leading portrait painters. In Paris, Israëls studied for a short time with the historical painter François Picot and also at the École des Beaux-Arts. It was however, the humble fisher-folk of Zandvoort, a remote village on the northern coast of Holland, who determined the direction of his art. There, in 1855, Israëls observed their daily routine, their natural, simple existence, with its sorrows and terrors and little joys, all unspoiled by the requirements of society. His eyes were opened to the beauty of real life and he came to see its drama was well worth depicting. Of his style and the influence of Rembrandt, the artist stated: "I began to realize that true art does not consist in smoothly finished drawing and scrupulously exact coloration. I perceived that I had to occupy myself much more with the correct appreciation of light and shade, with the attitudes and movements of beings and things . . . In Rembrandt alone did I find that breadth and freedom of execution which was lacking in all the others." In 1870, Israëls became one of a number of artists taking up residence at The Hague, which, like Paris, became a center to which painters flocked. He was to become the acknowledged leader of The Hague School, which took the art of Holland to its highest point since the 17th century. The artist won many honors; the Cross of the French Legion of Honor, a Chevalier of the Order of Leopold and even a medal at Philadelphia, but what he treasured most was the affection and admiration of his fellow countrymen, who acknowledged him as a true interpreter of the Dutch character and spirit.

Portrait of Marian Pritchett - Hague School Oil, Child by Jozef Israels
By Josef Israels
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
A wonderful and charming oil on board by Dutch Hague School painter Jozef Israels. This work depicts a portrait of Marian Pritchett the daughter of Robert Taylor Pritchett the English painter. Robert Taylor Pritchett travelled to the Netherlands in 1868 where he dined at Het Loo Palace with King Leopold II of Belgium and met the painter Jozef Israëls. As a consequence of that meeting and their friendship Israels executed this study of Pritchett's young daughter who had been born at the beginning of the year. Signature: Signed, inscribed and dated 1868 lower right Dimensions: Framed: 19"x16" Unframed: 13"x10" It was not until Joseph (Jozef) Israels had reached the age of 16 that he achieved his wish to work in Amsterdam, where he studied under Cornelis Kruseman. In 1845 he went to Paris, where he entered the studios of the French painters Paul Delaroche and Horace Vernet and the Swiss sculptor James Pradier for three years, but his real teacher at that time was the painter François Édouard Picot. At the 1867 Paris Exposition, Israels won a third-class medal in recognition of the merit of his work and he was decorated with the cross of the Légion d'Honneur. His contribution to the 1878 Exposition in Paris firmly established his reputation. The critics were unanimous in their praise of all his pictures, notably Alone in the World, From Darkness to Light, and Cobblers at Dinner. Israels won a first-class medal and was made an Officier de la Légion d'Honneur. Subsequently, he was appointed a commander. He won two Grands Prix at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles respectively. On 3 January 1885, he had been elected as a corresponding member of the Institut de France. The romantic influence of his artistic education can be clearly felt in his early paintings, which were often Biblical scenes. He did not free himself from this influence immediately after his return to Amsterdam in 1848, as he exhibited for the first time at the Salon de Paris in 1855 with the history painting William 'the Silent' of Orange Bidding Defiance to King Philip II of Spain. But Israels soon abandoned history painting in favour of genre scenes. He threw himself resolutely into the study of nature and the outdoors, and from 1857 he produced some noteworthy works. Due to illness Israels went to Zandvoort, a small fishing village, and it was here he grew to admire the sea, and he painted the lives of the fisherfolk with feeling. The following works date from this period: Evening on the Beach (1857); Contented Old Age, The Peaceful House (1861); Shepherd (1862); The Eve of Separation (1863); Boat (1866); and Sleeping Women (1868). Israels had found his vocation, and although he later dedicated himself to other genres, in particular the portrait, his best paintings remain these informal scenes depicting poor people. Until the end of his life, his powerful, varied technique was the inspiration for the Dutch painters Albert Neuhuys, Johannes...
