Joseph Glasco Mixed Media

American, 1925-1996

Joseph Glasco was an American abstract expressionist painter and sculptor. Perhaps one of the best kept secrets and one of the most amazing stories of 20th century art. Glasco was born in Oklahoma in 1925. He rose to fame at the young age of 25 and was given a one man show at one of New York’s leading galleries. He was also the youngest artist to be represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. He was also the 15th artist selected by MOMA to tour in the prestigious “Fifteen Americans” sponsored by MOMA in 1952, along with Pollock, Rothko and others. New York was not his comfort zone. He rebelled against the curators, critics and galleries. He left New York for Taos and ultimately settled in Galveston,TX. Close friends, collectors and sponsors included Stanley Seeger and Julian Schnabel. In 1980, Glasco toured India, Turkey and other countries in the region collecting silks, cloths which he incorporated into a few of his paintings as pictured here. A truly remarkable artist and story as chronicled by Michael Raeburn in The Fifteenth American. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and he served in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he enrolled at the Portsmouth Art School in Bristol, England. He also studied at the School of Painting and Sculpture, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He subsequently attended the Art Students League of New York. His works are on permanent display in numerous museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

OYV-19 - Contemporary Abstract Collage Painting- Yellow, measuring tape
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
OYV-19 is part of Eric Mack's ongoing body of work utilizing multi-media, complex compositions, and a grid centered around urban design. Using a grid to create the framework of the painting, Mack has re-purposed an old Lenny Kravitz album cover as the structure of the piece. On the edges of the piece you can see a complex edge consisting of a faux leather album cover, nylon mesh, and torn paper. As imagery, Mack has chosen musical notes, tape measure, and other music composition elements through Zerox copy adhered by matte medium to the surface. Mack then creates his own color to further tweak and personalize the piece. Eric Mack (b.1976, Charleston) creates mathematically based renderings with a distinct post-modern twist. Works are informed with super imposed grids, patterns, and portals. Layered surfaces are created with paint, found objects, natural fibers, and synthetic substrates that explore the systems of our visual world. His most recent show “Charting the Terrain” is on view now at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles was covered by the Los Angeles Times, KCRW, and LALA Magazine. His last solo exhibition was titled "Impossible Architectures" at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2017. Recent group shows include "Abstract Mind" at the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, South Korea, "Small Works 2017 at Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, "Checkered History", Outpost Artist Resources, Brooklyn, N.Y. 2015; Collections include High Museum Atlanta, Ing Investments, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport - Atlanta + Atlanta Gas & Light Co. French Mixed Media Abstract on Canvas.

Colourful, French mixed media abstract, acrylic, newsprint and ink from the 1980s. The canvas is signed and dated bottom right but we have not yet managed to decipher it. A colourful and engaging painting crossing over styles. The colourfield elements are reminiscent of the work of Mark Rothko, three defined bands of colour in orange/pink tones vertically dissecting the painting with one horizontal band across the top, and yet the elongated depiction of the female figures within the bands remind us of Gustav Klimt and his paintings of Adele. The background of the painting has been worked broadly with a palette knife whilst the detail has been added quickly and deftly with ink or finer brushstrokes. With the addition of newsprint (in French) the artist may...
