Jules Olitski Art

American, 1922-2007
Jules Olitski was an abstract Color Field painting in the mid-1960s, Olitski focused on the material qualities of surface and color in painting, rather than the personal expression of the artist. He pioneered a technique using an industrial spray gun to lightly apply paint on unprimed canvas, creating an effect of hazy color suspended midair. Even after returning to the brush, Olitski maintained this airy interaction of color and light. Olitski represented the United States in the 1966 Venice Biennale, and was given the first solo exhibition for a living American artist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969.

Abstract Work on Paper Mid-Century Modernism Greek American Gouache Drawing
By Jean Xceron
Located in New York, NY
Abstract Work on Paper Mid-Century Modernism Greek American Gouache Drawing. A modernist artist who emigrated to America from Greece in 1904, when he was fourteen years old, Jean Xceron is described as having a reputation as an artist that has mysteriously fallen into obscurity---especially since he was reportedly quite prominent during his lifetime. However, a partial explanation of that omission is the fact that many of his papers and early records have been lost. He was a painter of biomorphic abstractions and did collages, which were influenced by Dadaism. Xceron was active in New York City when modernism was gaining influence. Of him during this period, it was written that his artistic role was "a vital link between what is commonly termed as the first-generation (the Stieglitz group, the Synchromists, etc.) and second-generation, the American Abstract Artists, the Transcendental Painting...

"Grusgrav", Mid Century Modern Danish Color-Field Abstract in Yellow, 36/80
Located in Soquel, CA
"Grusgrav", a wonderfully minimal yet expressive mid century modern abstract limited edition hand signed lithograph by Frede Christoffersen (Danish, 1919-1987). This 1962 color-field abstract features a subdued palette of earthy golden rod yellows and sage, the geometric areas of color divided into fractured shapes with organic and expressive texture. Grusgrav, the title of the piece, is Danish for gravel pit. Titled "Grusgrav", signed with the artist's initials "FC" and dated "62" lower right. Numbered "36/80" lower left. Signed "Frede Christoffersen" on verso. Official Org. U.M. Grafik warranty certificate stamp on verso. Displayed in a vintage painted wood frame. Image size: 11.5"H x 17"W. Another lithograph print of "Grusgrav" from the same edition, number 44/80, is included in the collection of the Fuglsang Art Museum (Fuglsang Kunstmuseum) on the island of Lolland in Denmark. Born in Borup, Denmark, outside out Copenhagen. Christoffersen spent a short period at the Copenhagen Arts and Crafts School before travelling to the Far East in 1940-41. The result was his 20 "Smaa sorte Tegninger" published in 1941. From 1942 to 1943, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, both at the graphic arts school and at the school of painting, under Aksel Jørgensen...
