Kim English Art

b. 1957

Kim English depicts in his paintings the simple beauty found in daily life. Known for his mastery of chiaroscuro, each piece speaks to the true focus of English's inspiration, the harmony existing between light and shadow. His subject matter, ranging from a street-side fruit stand in Mexico to a sun-filled window, creates a particular mood, through which the viewer is introduced to charming scenarios that are wrapped in depth and texture, and are entirely about paint. This is the primary force of English's painting: the astonishing manipulation of his medium. Kim English explores and creates visual observations of everyday life capturing the human spirit on canvas. He maintains a feeling of spontaneity by completing each painting in one sitting the alla prima method. He says of using this method, Immediacy is important. Not only because it is often the nature of people, but for me, it is the most instinctive way to paint. English was born in 1957 in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in a rural community near Colorado Springs. After graduation from the Rocky Mountain School of Art, he joined the faculty and later began teaching at the Art Students League of Denver and the Scottsdale Artists School. He has exhibited at the Allied Artists of America winning the Gold Medal of Honor; the National Academy of Design; the Artists of America-Denver Rotary Club; NAWA 21st Annual Exhibition; Arts for the Parks; the Colorado Governor's Invitational – Loveland Museum; the A.R. Mitchell Memorial Museum of Western Art; The Knickerbocker 42nd Annual Exhibition; the Oil Painters of America and won both the Certificate of Merit and the Joseph Hartley Memorial Award at two Salmagundi Club Exhibitions.

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...

Ghost Town, Colorado Prospector Scene by Harold Skene, Vintage Western Painting
By Harold Vincent Skene
Located in Denver, CO
“Ghost Town” by Harold Skene (1883–1978) is a striking vintage oil painting that captures the haunting beauty of Colorado’s mining past. In this evocative Western landscape, a lone prospector and his pack mule stand amid the weathered ruins of an abandoned mountain town. The late summer or early autumn setting is rendered in rich, earthy tones—golden yellows, sage greens, dusty pinks, and soft blues—creating a vivid sense of atmosphere and place. Painted in oil on board and signed by the artist at the lower right, this work is also titled and dated on the verso. It reflects Skene’s architectural training and his artistic roots in the early 20th-century Colorado art scene. The painting is presented in a classic mahogany frame, with outer dimensions measuring 30 x 35.5 x 2.75 inches; image size is 24 x 30 inches. A graduate of Harvard’s School of Architecture, Harold Skene studied at the Denver Art Academy and the Broadmoor Art Academy and was an assistant to noted Western artist Allen Tupper True...
