Dalton was born in Orem, Utah, moved his family to Michigan and eventually settled in the Silicon Valley of California. Eldest son, David, describes his father as "a truly talented artist...." Lee was a positive influence, encouraging his children's artistic talent. In addition to son, David, two of his daughters also became painters. David recalls his father's advice about gaining experience in painting, "leave miles of canvas behind you".
