Lilly Martin Spencer Paintings

1822-1902

Lilly Martin Spencer was a professional artist for over 60 years, painting portraits, still lifes, miniatures and genre scenes. In the 1850s to mid-1860s her genre scenes depicting domestic topics were engraved for wide distribution, spreading her name and fame, and putting her forward as an American claimant to the rich tradition of European genre, especially the Dutch and English schools whose prints graced parlor walls all over the North American continent. Spencer’s genre scenes remain her best remembered work to this day. Generally sunny, bordering sentimental, they conjure the popular image of antebellum American life, the nostalgic mythology of the last decades of a cultural optimism and innocence that ended (if it ever existed) with the Civil War. Spencer’s own story, however, is considerably more nuanced than this snapshot of her career. She was a skilled portraitist, but it is perhaps her still-life work which is most intriguing. It played an important role as a pictorial element in her most famous genre scenes, but until recently, few examples of her dedicated still life subjects have come to light.

Squash and Onions, warm earth tones food realistic still life
By Douglas Newton
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Doug Newton’s hyper-real paintings observe reality, explore translucency, reflections and luminosity, and dazzle the viewer with all the ways light can transform our perceptions. His subject matter concentrates on still lives of food, toys, candy and household objects. In addition to many group shows across the country, Mr. Newton’s show, “HARD CANDY and other confections” represents his fifth solo exhibition. His paintings have been collected in numerous private collections. Mr. Newton resides in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Sonia Coman writes in her essay, Doug Newton’s hard candy: the confection of painting Doug Newton’s paintings are about… painting. The hyperrealist technique of trompe l’oeil or “trick the eye” is knowingly playful. It simultaneously calls attention to the illusion of a different material—for example, translucent candy wrappers—and the reality of the layers of paint, masterfully applied to the canvas. In that, Newton’s paintings pay homage to an esteemed series of trompe l’oeil masters, from Inquisition-era Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán to Gilded-Age American painter William Michael Harnett...

Ca. 1820 Portrait of a Woman with Kashmir shawl.

Ca. 1820 Portrait of a Woman. Léon Cogniet (1794-1880, Paris), attributed. French school of 19th century. Tecnicque: oils on canvas. Dimensions: 70cm x 61cm 20th century wooden frame. Old attribution to Léon Cogniet (1794-1880, Paris) is inscribed on the wooden frame. Portrait of the restoration period, post Napoleonic wars. Stylistically the painting is found in the transition period from the late Empire period to the beginning of Romanticism. The new artistic trends can be seen in the increased naturalism, representation of the landscape/nature, in the contrasts, and in a greater emotionality of the person represented. Detailed but loose is the way to describe the winter dress...

French Romantic School, 19th Century, Portrait of a man, oil on paper
Located in Paris, FR
French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...
