This magnificent three-piece mantel clock garniture exemplifies the height of French Empire Revival design in the 19th century—where classical grandeur, refined materials, and superb craftsmanship converge to create a work of both artistry and precision. The Clock (Centerpiece) The clock stands as a figural masterpiece rooted in the Empire aesthetic. Its rectilinear case is crafted from deeply polished black Belgian marble (or slate), the dark surface setting a dramatic stage for the richly gilded bronze ornamentation. Above, a patinated bronze figure of a seated muse—likely Clio, the Muse of History, or Urania, the Muse of Astronomy—rests elegantly beside a lyre, symbolizing art, knowledge, and harmony. The frieze features remarkable ormolu embellishments, including medallions depicting the Arethusa head type, inspired by ancient Greek coinage from Syracuse, Sicily (circa 400 BC).
