“I think many people will already know my “Proust armchair”. It is a romantic, baroque chair, on which an endless number of multi-coloured dots are hand-paint- ed using the pointillism technique. These dots cover the whole armchair, both the fabric and the wooden decorations. It’ s a re-design work. It is, in fact, a combination of a mock-antique armchair with a detail from a painting of a garden by French artist Signac. From 1978 onwards, the “Proust armchair” was produced in many versions, using different colours, ma- terials and dimensions, and was even made of ceramics and bronze. It travelled all around the world and was hosted in many museums. The project name of our ‘Sequoia’ bar stool was ‘Forest’, as the division of the stem into two tubes reminded us of a solid branch growing out of tree trunk. Sequoia has a clear recognizable, unified graphical outline - it reminds us of a calligraphical character. The foot rest has the shape of a foot plate. This gives a certain freedom of movement: it’s like we’ve lifted a segment of the floor. To us, the similarity in shape between the seat and foot rest is an important feature as it makes more meaning of the branch like division of the stem. A die-cast aluminium shell made up of many small, perforated and triangular faces. Chair_One is in a certain sense built like a football, i.e. with a series of flat ele- ments joined one to the other at angles to create a three-dimensional shape. All this is achieved by exploiting the potential of die-casting which is a precise technology allowing complex three-dimensional shapes to be obtained from metal (in this case aluminium). The result is therefore a chair in which the spaces prevail over the solid parts to characterise its aesthetic quality. Chair_One has now become a classic of the future. Chairs, stools, tables and seating systems for domestic and contract use (bars and restaurants). Chair_One: legs in polished, anodised or painted aluminium; concrete base painted transparent natural or black; base and seat in die-cast aluminium treated with sputtered fluorinated titanium and painted in polyester powder. Suitable for outdoor use (painted version). Flame-retardant. Also available cushions in fabric (Kvadrat “Steelcut Trio” or “Steelcut 2”) or in leather for indoor use and cushions in polyurethane for outdoor use.
