This streamlined sofa by Belgian Avant-Garde artist Marcel-Louis Baugniet is specially designed for a house on the outskirts of Brussels in Watermaal-Bosvoorde, Belgium. This apartment building, also known as ‘Delobe’ (1938/39), is designed by modernist theorist architect Gaston Brunfaut (1894-1974) who was strongly influenced by Le Corbusier’s ideas on simplicity and functionality. Baugniet commissioned Brunfaut to design furniture for one of the Delobe houses, resulting in the creation of this sofa and other pieces. Although Baugniet was a versatile artist, he is most famous for his constructivist paintings characterized by geometric compositions that featured graceful colors alongside stark forms. Baugniet's furniture reflects the same artistic approach evident in this sofa. The construction of the sofa is based on a crescent shape contoured with round smooth edges.
