Known as a risk-taker in the world of 21st-century art, Margaret Fitzgerald creates textured and provocative abstract paintings that are rife with audacious colors, forms and scratches she makes in the surface of the canvases.
Born in London, England, Fitzgerald grew up in Japan and the United States, where she lived in Connecticut with her family before moving to New Mexico at the age of 18. Fitzgerald developed an interest in art in her youth and studied fine art and art history at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. She also attended the Instituto Allende in San Miguel Allende, Mexico, and earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the University of New Mexico.
Since becoming a full-time creative more than 20 years ago, the inspiration for Fitzgerald’s sizeable abstract oil paintings and mixed media works have evolved from an introspective examination of her life to reactions to the political climate and societal issues.
Fitzgerald has exhibited her paintings in solo and group shows in New York City, San Francisco, New Mexico and elsewhere throughout the United States and Europe. Her works are held in several private collections in the U.S. and around the world, including Tokyo, Japan and the Venetian Hotels in Las Vegas, Macao, China and Stockholm, Sweden.
