Margaret Putnam Mixed Media

American, 1913-1987

Margaret Putnam was a San Antonio artist who left an artistic legacy rare even in the art world. She was a 20th-century woman with a Renaissance soul who lavished her work with brilliant color, always breaking and making the rules to achieve the desired effect. An explorer, Putnam was self-taught. She worked in oil, watercolor, wax resist, casein and pastel, exploring new avenues, developing new techniques, combining mediums and creating a unique style. She had a background in fashion illustration as well. Even after becoming partially paralyzed from Lou Gehrig's disease, she continued to work relentlessly. She had a little arts and crafts community in La Villita. She was a remarkable woman, a talented artist and in the real spirit of the Alamo, she represented true Texas grit. Her strokes were broad, her colors bold, her paintings powerful and expressive. She painted an 18-by-Seven and a half foot mural at the top of the San Antonio Hilton Hotel. She has won many awards such as River Art Show, San Antonio, Beaumont Museum, Texas Fine Arts Museum and Texas Watercolor Society. She has also won the Old Testament National Exhibit Award, Award for ‘One of Ten Outstanding Women in San Antonio’, ‘Outstanding Artist of the Year’ from San Antonio Art League and  J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award. She was also the three-time winner of Top Award for Oils from Texas Fine Arts and received Recipient of the Year award from the San Antonio Arts Commission. Revered for her innovative techniques and inimitable style before her death in 1989, her renown continues even today.

Untitled
By Louise Nevelson
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this striking collage by the inimitable Louise Nevelson, who is regarded as one of the most original, influential, and successful American sculptors of the 20th century. Nevelson's enduring appeal lies in her distinct visual language, which is apparent in all of her works, regardless of medium. While her iconic monochromatic wood assemblages are instantly recognizable, she continuously experimented with diverse materials, including resin, steel, and bronze, as well as numerous printmaking techniques. Collage was an important part of Nevelson's practice, defining her signature aesthetic. Much like her approach to printmaking, her collages possess a sculptural ethos that transcends the two-dimensional surface, imbuing the composition with a remarkable sense of volume, texture, and depth. One could argue that Nevelson's sculpture was informed by collage in that she took assorted existing forms combining them in order to create an entirely new and distinct arrangement. This untitled collage is an exceptional example of the artist's mastery of the medium. Featuring an assemblage of wood veneer, mirror, and metal, this work reflects Nevelson's meticulous sense of form and rhythm. Subtle details, such as the alternating direction of the wood veneer grain further heighten the visual complexity of the otherwise minimal composition. The inclusion of wood veneer marks a notable shift for Nevelson, who was previously loyal to a strict monochromatic palette of black or white. It wasn’t until the 1970s with her experimentation in collage that she expanded her palette. Nevelson also created jewellery and this collage acknowledges her activity in that realm. Created at the age of 83 during the final chapter of her career, this piece powerfully captures Nevelson's enduring spirit and dedication to artistic innovation. Today Nevelson's work can be found in every major public collection across North America and beyond. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Visit our Toronto gallery on Thursdays or by appointment. Co-published by Brooke Alexander, Inc. and Marlborough Gallery, Inc., New York. Condition is excellent. Born in Nashville Tennesee in 1937 Red Grooms is a; "Sculptor, painter, installation artist, filmmaker, and printmaker. An eager participant in late 1950s happenings, in the 1960s he developed high-spirited, mixed-media environmental sculpture on an enormous scale. In these “sculpto-pictoramas,” as he has called them, multiple, life-size, cartoonish figures inhabit sharply observed localities, usually areas of New York. Related to pop art, his zany work often carries a sarcastic edge but not at the expense of good-natured hilarity. It also plays on nostalgia that stems from the artist's evident affection for his acutely rendered subjects, as befits an admirer of Edward Hopper's paintings. Charles Roger Grooms left Peabody College there to enroll in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a year. He then decamped for New York to continue his studies at the New School for Social Research (now New School). He also attended Hans Hofmann's summer school in Provincetown. In the late 1950s, along with Allan Kaprow...
