A very fine late 19th century French Belle Epoque mounted bronze Dòre flame mahogany Cartel wall clock. The clock features a circular white enamel dial, which is inscribed with both Roman Numerals and Arabic Numbers. beautifully incised gilt hands and convex glass inscribed "Planchon A Paris". Circa 1880 French Mathieu Planchon apprenticed with his father, served several years with other clockmakers including Robert-Houdin and then went into business for himself eventually opening his shop at the Palais Royal in 1890. He was a skilled maker who was influenced by both earlier decorative trends and the ingenious clocks originally designed by Nicolas Grollier De Servierè that were illustrated in DeServierè’s catalog . Large and rare ormolu and porcelain Louis XVI style bracket clock by Planchon French, Late 19th Century Clock: height 46cm, width 46cm, depth 14cm Bracket: height 30cm, width 52cm, depth 17cm Featuring a design that is exemplary of the innovative and unique clockmaking of Mathieu Planchon, this beautiful bracket clock combines a complex semi-circular dial and movement, with elegant porcelain panels and radiant gilt-bronze mounts to create a stunning decorative timepiece. Craft in Neoclassical Louis XVI style yet with clear Rococo stylistic influences, the semi-circular dial consists of a single fly-back hand against Roman numerals and painted porcelain face, decorated with flowers and a landscape scene with a lake in front of architectural ruins. The dial is signed: 'Planchon / Paris,' as is the movement, and it is set within an arched gilt-bronze case with extensive Rococo foliate ribbons and garlands surmounting, centred on a rosette below, and mounted on a pair of gilt hoof-feet. The bracket is similarly decorated, with a trellis lattice in between two columns, beneath a small table surface banded by a vine-shaped frieze.
