Michael Halsband Photography
American, b. 1956
Born and raised in New York City, Michael Halsband discovered photography at the mere age of 10. He received a B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts in 1980 and began making portraits of artists and musicians, including his most known and iconic portrait of Andy Warhol & Jean-Michel Basquiat with boxing gloves. His early projects included six months as the tour photographer for The Rolling Stones on their 1981 “Tattoo You” tour, as well as a six-year project documenting the School of American Ballet. In 2005, Michael published “Surf Book,” a collection of his portraits of legendary surfers, and the culmination of a five-year project. He has exhibited worldwide. Some of Halsband's recent solo exhibitions include, “Halsband Portraits,” in April 2015 at the National Arts Club, Grand Gallery in New York City, and a larger retrospective also titled “Halsband Portraits,” at the Southampton Arts Center, NY, in November 2017. Michael published his second book, “Halsband Portraits,” as an accompaniment to the National Arts Club exhibition.to

During the 1960s, Dennis Hopper (1936–2010) carried a camera everywhere—on film sets and locations, at parties, in diners, bars and galleries, driving on freeways, and walking in political marches. He photographed movie idols, pop stars, writers, artists, girlfriends, and complete strangers. Along the way he captured some of the most intriguing moments of his generation with a keen and intuitive eye. From a selection of photographs compiled by Hopper and gallerist Tony Shafrazi—more than a third of them previously unpublished—this Collector’s Edition distills the essence of Hopper’s prodigious photographic career, documenting the likes of Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
In many ways this work is photography as film, a poignant narrative expressed through a series of stark images—early shots of Tijuana bullfights, LA happenings, and urban street scenes show an experimental freedom that would translate into the vivid cinematic imagery of Easy Rider and beyond.
The images are accompanied by introductory essays from Tony Shafrazi and legendary West Coast art pioneer Walter Hopps, as well as an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley. With excerpts from Victor Bockris’s interviews of Hopper’s famous subjects, friends, and family, this is an unprecedented exploration of the life and mind of one of America’s most fascinating personalities.

History:
Tony Shafrazi, November 2015: "My good friend, the Swiss gallerist Bruno Bischofberger, had worked with Andy Warhol since the mid 1960s. He got to know Jean-Michel’s paintings and started working with him in 1982 or ’83. There had been a suggestion of a collaboration between Warhol, Basquiat, and Francesco Clemente. Then, Jean-Michel and Andy, very enthusiastically and seriously, went on to undertake a whole processes of painting collaboratively at Warhol’s Factory for a year to a year and half, making somewhere between 70 and 80 large paintings that represented an extraordinary—and very rare in history—body of work.
Their joint body of work represented a whole year and half of collaboration and production. It was not an overnight thing. The two artists worked together, one painting over the other, back and forth, and I immediately thought of two people sparring and boxing together, which is how I hit upon the idea of a boxing theme for the show’s advertisement."
